Is the title of "Pope" permanent?

  1. A pope, after his death, seems to retain the title “pope”. Is this just a convention or is there something official endorsing this? Is there any permanence to “popehood” analogous to the eternal nature of “priesthood”?

  2. If a pope resigns, does he continue to have the title “Pope” once his successor is elected? If not, does he get the title back after death?

Just trying to make sure I get my popery right
