The first thing you must understand is that Martin Luther never taught that Scripture should be taken alone or privately interpreted. To this day conservative Lutheran Dioceses teach the Bible should be read with the clear understanding that the purpose of the Church and the Priest is to is to help and or interpret difficult verses of Scripture for lay people. No one is allowed to interpret the Bible for themselves and anyone who does and refuses to conform to Church teaching will be excommunicated because of it.
What Luther actually taught (which many denoms, who shall remain nameless, refuse to believe) is that in questions of doctrine the Bible is authoritative over the Church. Obviously Rome disagreed and continues to disagree to this day.
But private interpretation is dangerous and in all likelihood will lead to folly because Christ did not create a Bible He created a Church. Now Lutherans say we know this because of the Bible and Catholics say we know the Bible is authoritative because of the Church, but either way I think both would agree the two are inseparable and should always remain so.
