Is this considered using the Lord's name in vain?

I said “Thank God” for something. Is that considered using the Lord’s name in vain?

I sure hope not - I say that all the time when I’m relieved.

If it is truly intended to give thanks to God, or to acknowledge God’s providence, there is no problem. If it is spoken otherwise, for example, in sarcasm or for dramatic effect, that could be “in vain.”

No it isn’t.

I agree with Beryllos’ post.

Most of the time I say “Thank goodness,” but when I get that feeling of relief in my chest I say “Thank God” because I know He fixed whatever it was that I was anxious about.

Thanks everyone! I ended up confessing it.

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His mercy endures for ever.”
