Japanese Stem-Cell Scientist Yoshiki Sasai Is Dead (Apparent Suicide)

#1

*A top Japanese scientist who co-authored disputed stem-cell papers committed suicide by hanging himself, police said Tuesday.

Yoshiki Sasai, deputy director of the Riken Center for Developmental Biology, guided research published in the journal Nature that purported to show a revolutionary method of creating stem cells by dipping cells in a mild acid solution. The research, published in January, was quickly challenged. Nature retracted the papers in July, saying they contained inaccurate data and other flaws that undermined their conclusions*.WSJ

The article is behind a subscription wall. But the below link would seem helpful.

He had co-authored two stem cell articles in the journal Nature and was just coming to terms with their retraction and ballooning controversy which was a great embarrassment for his famous research institute.

He also mentioned that he was shamed by his failure as a mentor.

The latter indicating a bit of the Japanese notion of “saving face”, interesting article.

Rest in Peace. I’m sorry for anyone who takes the way of suicide.

May Our Lord have mercy upon him and may his family and friends find consolation in His love.

Eternal rest grant him O Lord.
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed
through the mercy of God
Rest in peace.
Amen.
