I have always wondered about this. In Is. 7:14 it says the virgin shall bear a son and name him Immanuel. Then the angel tells Joseph to name the baby Jesus. Am I missing something here? Why wasn’t the baby named Immanuel?
The name Immanuel means “God with us”. It is a pledge of Divine help and also a description of the nature of the Messiah, who is God with us.
Here is a quote from a name definition website: “the meaning of Jesus is “the Lord is salvation”. Short form of Joshua, from the Hebrew name Jehoshua.” Thus, it is not inconsistent, but “God with us” is also revealed through “the Lord is salvation”. It is simply two degrees of the same sign to mankind. In my observation, prophecy is principle more than precision.
