John chrysostom's ear

Our beloved Hierarch, St. John Chrysostom, has the relic of his skull preserved and venerated on Mt. Athos… Now a peculiar feature of this relic is that the ear on this skull is incorrupt… It is also warm… The following is a pictorial excursion on his Feast Day when that skull is carried in procession from monastery to monastery:

Enjoy…

Does everyone know why his ear is incorrupt?

I too haven’t heard of this before. But after searching, the top three results gave the explanation as -

  1. because an Angel of the Lord would whisper into this ear whilst he was writing his numerous works. http://holymountain-agionoros.blogspot.com/2010/11/0038-holy-relics-kept-at-athonite.html
  2. St. John’s ear in which St. Paul spoke to him is still incorrupt to this day https://iconandlight.wordpress.com/2013/11/13/st-paul-inspiring-and-guiding-st-john-chrysostom/
  3. Icon depicting the Divine inspiration of St. John Chrysostom: St. Proclos his disciple witnessing St. Paul speaking into St. John’s ear . http://full-of-grace-and-truth.blogspot.com/2008/11/divine-inspiration-and-st-john.html

Any truth to any of these three website articles? I honestly don’t know.

Hard to say. He was referred to as golden mouthed, not golden eared.

He was in his room working on his commentary of St. Paul’s Epistles…

A delegation arrived to see him…

His cell attendant came to tell him they had arrived…

But someone was with him in his room at his desk…

They were leaned over working on the commentary…

So the attendant eventually sent the delegation away…

Chrysostom was surprised to hear he had missed the delegation…

He asked why he had not been told of their arrival…

The cell attendant told him what had happened…

Chrysostom replied he had been alone all day in his room…

“What did he look like” he asked…

And looking around the room, he pointed to an icon of St. Paul…

He had been bent over Chrysostom’s left ear…

ps - That is my doubtless faulty recollection of the hagiography…

But it is essentially correct…

Yes, that’s pretty much what I read too. I was questioning the websites, basically because anyone can create a website and write what they want. Didn’t seem to me to be on or associated to Eastern Catholic Church, iow, an easily authenticated website/address.
