Lines and rubrics

I am running an RCIA group and in preparation for one of the gospel sessions I noticed that some of the readings and the gospel have a black line running down the left hand side - not for the entire passage but for some elements of it. Can anyone tell me what this means - before a catechumen asks me and I have to admit ignorance.

Many thanks.

It probably shows the shorter version of the reading, although which part is the shorter one I can’t tell you…

It’s probably some sort of marker for the “long form” and “short form” of the readings.

By looking at the text, you could probably figure it out, but if you’d wrather not, you could upload a picture or scan of it here, and we could take a stab at it.
