Hey i remember these guys.
May the Lord have mercy on Scott's soul amen.

O God of spirits and of all flesh, Who hast trampled down death, and overthrown the devil, and given life to Thy world: do Thou, O Lord, give rest to Scott, who has recently fallen asleep; accept him into a place of light, a place of green pasture, a place of repose, where all sickness, sorrow and sighing have fled away.

I didn't see anything about it on NME or Pitchfork, though now that I just checked, I'm reminded of X's Exene Cervenka cancelling her tour because of MS issues, Bryan Ferry (from Roxy Music) was just released from the hospital, and Aretha Franklin's still hanging in there...so, not counting the new Beady Eyes and Strokes CD's, it really hasn't been a good year for music so far.
