Man's steps

In The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 20 Verse 24 states:
Man’s steps are from the Lord;
how, then, can a man understand his way?

Please explain.

*A man’s steps are ordered by the LORD;
how then can man understand his way? *
(RSV translation)

The steps of man are guided by the Lord:
but who is the man that can understand his own way?

(Douay Rheims translation)

The footnote in the Haydock Bible explains it this way:
Ver. 24. Way? Jeremias x. 23.** Independently of God, who can do any good? **(Calmet)
