I agree with a lot of what you said here, and it makes sense!
Plus, taxation of a substance on par with alcohol? Sounds like a good revenue source to me.
Also, though I really disagree with him as a politician on most things...one thing that Ron Paul mentioned in a debate (and I'm paraphrasing is) "If we were to make all drugs legal tomorrow, how many of you would start using heroin?"
I quite liked Ron Paul but I'm a Libertarian so that is not to surprising- I just don't see how drug laws work, throwing huge amounts of revenue into the drug cartels for every drugs, why not remove the criminal element completely and begin to treat the problem instead of criminalising every drug user?
People are going to smoke marijuana no matter what, the biggest evil in the situation is the criminal control over the market which breeds violence and death so why is everyone so insistent on allowing this to continue? Medicinal marijuana is a great medicine shown by a great multitude of medicinal studies so why is it not allowed to be used? Hemp is a great substitute for paper and other materials in many circumstances, so why are we not using it? We allow alcohol which does far more damage to families and society than marijuana does, yet we criminalise those that smoke marijuana and allow binge drinking and the after effect of that every day where is the common sense?
This is an authoritarian vs libertarian debate, what do you want the government dictating you laws that are unjust and cause death to thousands every year or do you want a government that will help the victims and not criminalise those that are not criminals. Remember many of those charged with marijuana possession have no previous criminal record- they are in prison for possession of a plant.
