Mass Intentions

Is it acceptable/appropriate to have a Mass said for a deceased relative or friend who was a non-Catholic?

When I had Masses said for 2 relatives, I wasn't asked if they were Catholic (they were, but I wasn't asked, nor did I mention it).

I have requested Mass intentions for various people—relatives, friends, priests—in four parishes and two cathedrals. The only question I've ever been asked is whether the person is living or deceased.

You may have a Mass said for anyone living or dead, Catholic or non-Catholic.
