It is a fact that I have constantly observed over many many years, that a LOT of people are very concerned about money - in particular how much money they consider others to have. This appears to weigh on their minds and they grapple with what they then feel they have to decide is fair. Why should some people have more money than others? what is fair? Are some people getting more unfair advantages than others? These problems/temptations cause a lot of resentment and ill feeling; are the subject of a LOT of gossip and trouble making. Envy, resentment of the perceived amount of money others have and are entitled to, which leads to hatred and broken relationships.

It was my upbringing that a person’s financial situation was their own business, as was the source of any apparent wealth. Not so, nowadays it seems. The green eyed monster has grown so big, that it comments and gossips about someone’s personal affairs as if it had every right, demanding knowledge of the exact amount and source of someone’s financial situation in order to satiate it.

Please pray for this unfortunate sin, which is growing larger than life. :banghead:

Praying with you this sin diminishes and people learn to be happy with what they have and realize that the personal affairs of others is NOT their business nor is it polite to comment and ask such questions.

So long as ‘Mammon’ exists in the world, so will it be contentious.

I do not agree that a person’s wealth and the means by which they came about it as being ‘their private affair’ - firstly it is God’s business, then it is the ‘taxman’s’, then it is the place of the law to know if dodgy goings on have been involved.

I do agree there is too much ‘green eye’ these days, but that goes across the range from the billionaires to society’s untermenschen.

As for me, well I am genuinely not among the fiscally flush, but I feel less burdened for that. Saves me having to order pockets for my shroud, or woorying how much I can slip past St. Peter.

When it comes to money I have long been mindful of ‘The Richman and Poor Lazarus’ and ‘The Widow’s Mite’.

Dear Lord, may folks be wary of the Sin of Envy, and may they also remember, ‘What doth it profit a man if he gains the whole world but in doing so suffers the loss of his eternal soul?’ Amen.

Praying with all.

Prayer to Obtain Detachment From Earthly Goods

O Jesus, Who chose a life of poverty and obscurity, grant me the grace to keep my heart detached from the transitory things of this world. Let it be that henceforth, You are my only treasure, for You are infinitely more precious than all others possessions. My heart is too solicitous for the vain and fleeting things of earth. Make me always mindful of Your warning words: “What does it profit a man if he gain the whole world, but suffer the loss of his own soul?” Grant me the grace to keep Your holy example always before my eyes, that I may despise the nothingness of this world and make You the object of all my desires and affections. Amen.

“Well, it’s my money and I need it now!!” Actually I have what I need which is more than many others in the world have. What does offend me is blatant drug money/riches and money derived from other crimes. Also government waste bugs me because it is money or assets to could relieve hunger and poverty. Well, I guess I am easily bug-able.

and mercy in our everyday dealings with one another.

May we respect life
as we work to solve problems of family and nation,
economy and ecology.

Spirit of God,
spark our faith,
hope and love into new action each day.

Fill our lives with wonder and awe
in your presence which penetrates all creation.

Amen. **

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
