Well, depends on the 11 year old. I let my kids watch it with me at that age but I did skip over the Castle Anthrax scene (nice thing about DVDs).
Some interesting discussions came out of the movie. Ascetism, role of the church in medieval life, gregorian chant, intricacy of writing in hand-copied bibles by monks prior to printing presses, etc.
While I love the political peasant sketch my kid literally fell down on the floor hysterical over the bit in the cave after defeating the killer rabbit. The whole ' if he died carving it he wouldn't have bothered to carve 'aaaaahhhhhh'"
I think it really does depend on the 11 or 12 year old you have in mind. We actually watched it as a family a couple of years ago when my daughter was in that age bracket. There are some 11-12 year olds I know that won't be ready to see this movie for years and years I don't think.
But when you are saying you're going to show it to a group of 11-12 year olds, that would give me pause. Unless you know all the parents and their sense of humor and what they find appropriate for their children, I'd find a different movie.
But just for the record, its a great movie!
