More bacteria, less people?

I don’t really know if this belongs here, but here goes. I went to a lecture by the biologist(and secular humanist) E.O. WIlson last night. It started out as an interesting discussion about the various kinds of life-the millions of species of bacteria, fungi, etc. He lamented that many species were dying out. Then he started going on a rant about how humans were destroying the planet. He was actually praising the population decline in the industrial world. He said something about women choosing to have “a smaller, quality number of children.” Blah, blah, blah. At that point, I walked out. So another species declines, its a tragedy. But if the human population decreases, that’s just great?
