More Public Sector Employees Belong To a Union than Private Sector Employees

“More public sector employees (7.9 million) belonged to a union than did private sector employees (7.4 million), despite there being 5 times more wage and salary workers in the private sector.”

This is because the private sector has this nagging, pesky problem. It actually needs to make a profit to exist.

Part of the difference may be that governmental managers may have less of an incentive to try defeat a union organizing drive. In some ways managers benefit from the unions, for example, the managers at my public sector employer like it when we get big raises because when we get a bigger raise, they get a bigger raise.

Or maybe that it’s all but illegal to form unions in many states now a days. The federal government doesn’t stop it.

At the job I work at (We’re underpaid by about 30% compared to the same position at other companies), every time the company even hears a whiff of the word ‘Union’ it finds out and fires every single person even remotely involved with the individual who tried to plan anything.
