Music which gives you a lift

My mother’s favourite piece of music was Bach/Gound’s Ave Maria .

I asked , “Why ?”

She replied , “It gives me a lift.”

I am into chants at the moment. There is an Eastern Chant for Psalm 50/51 done by a few different people.

Do we say non religious music too?

Why not ? :smiley:

I love the choir Only Boys Aloud and the Welsh hymn Calon Lan .

I could hardly believe my ears on Saturday evening , when before Mass , a seminarian staying in the parish for six months and a brilliant organist , played Calon Lan .

That’s beautiful @jesusmademe .

I found this translation which I hope is correct .

Tryggare kan ingen vara, Children of the heav’nly Father
Än Guds lilla barnaskara, Safely in His bosom gather;
Stjärnan ej på himlafästet, Nestling bird nor star in Heaven
Fågeln ej i kända nästet. Such a refuge e’er was given.
Herren sina trogna vårdar, God His own doth tend and nourish;
Uti Sions helga gårdar, In His holy courts they flourish;
Över dem Han sig förbarmar, From all evil things He spares them;
Bär dem uppå fadersarmar. In His mighty arms He bears them.
Ingen nöd och ingen lycka, Neither life nor death shall ever
Skall utur Hans hand dem rycka, From the Lord His children sever;
Han vår vän för andra vänner, Unto them His grace He showeth,
Sina barns bekymmer känner. And their sorrows all He knoweth.
Se Han räknar håren alla, Though He giveth or He taketh,
Som från deras huvud falla, God His children ne’er forsaketh;
Han oss föder och oss kläder, His the loving purpose solely
Under sorgen Han oss gläder. To preserve them pure and holy.
Gläd dig då, du lilla skara, Lo, their very hairs He numbers,
Jakobs Gud skall dig bevara, And no daily care encumbers
För Hans vilja måste alla, Them that share His ev’ry blessing
Fiender till jorden falla. And His help in woes distressing.
Vad Han tar och vad Han giver, Praise the Lord in joyful numbers:
Samme Fader Han förbliver, Your Protector never slumbers.
Och Hans mål är blott det ena, At the will of your Defender
Barnets sanna väl allena. Ev’ry foeman must surrender.

I used Google tralslate fot the two first verses:

No one can be safer,
Than the little children of God,
The star not on the sky,
The bird not in the known nest.
The Lord’s faithful guardians,
In the sacred courtyards of Zion,
Of those He has mercy on,
Bear them on father’s arms.

Your version is ok but I am used to the Swedish version. Lina Sandell wrote great hymn texts.

“Salve Regina” is my favorite uplifting song

“Canto dei Sanfedisti” is a close second

“La Pelea con el diablo” is a great third

They give me a good lift because of a mix of the lyrics and the ease of singing along with the songs.

Beautifully sung by children of a school in Oxford .

Then as sung at the funeral of Princess Diana .

This one is a traditional American folk song that dates back to the early 19th century. It is about the love of an American fur trader who falls in love with a Sioux Indian maiden who lives near the banks of the Missouri River in the (then) western wilderness of America. But alas, he must leave her and now pines away for his beloved as he departs.

I like them, but they’re for soprano.

Not quite churchy, but I do get a lift from it
Maybe I can have it at my funeral.
