Nativity figures

Everyone is familiar with the beloved figures of the nativity scene, and they always seem to be in the same poses: Mary kneeling, Joseph on one knee with a crooked staff, the shepherd with the lamb on his shoulders, the baby in the manger with his arms open wide. I often wonder if these particular figures are from a famous painting or something. Does anyone know?
