Need help - Creating a New Catholic College Magazine

Creating a New Catholic College Magainze Need some ideas

Good Sunday to everyone out there tonight. My name is Tiffany and I writing tonight to ask the help of young and old a question. What if you had a chance to have a College Catholic Magainze for the youth would you read it? Why or why not ? If so what would you want as a reading in this type of magainze for you or your kids ?

I feel that God has laid it on my heart to start one for our youth, because I see the need that they are having out there with college issues, sex religion and everything else in between. So i wanted to start one because I wanted the youth to have a voice and to show that God is forever persent in their lives through this magainze.

What should the tilte be and what shouold be inside is the question?
Please help by you doing this it helps me figure out what really needs to be in and talked about in this magaize. If you would like to help or have any questions for me about this project leave me a post .

Thanks and God Bless.
Tiffany

I think this is a wonderful idea. Something to go against the tide of other youth magazines which usually focus on sex, sex, sex, outrageous fashions, sotted celebrities… and did I mention, sex?

A gift subscription to such a magazine would be an excellent gift to a young person also.

Good luck!

I have often wondered where on earth there might be something on which I could center my love. But neither on earth nor in heaven do I find any such thing but only my beloved Jesus… I am the fruit of your passion, Jesus, born of your wounds. O Jesus, seek me in love; I no longer possess anything; you have stolen my heart…” *- St. Gemma Galgani

I think it is a great idea. I would look around the area for various resources (youth groups, Masses for Youth, ministries, soup kitchen volunteers needed, etc.) so that you build not only a readership but get the Catholic Youth out there together doing.

I would include some things that are always present and then include news and features. For example, sections on…

*]Why do Catholics do that?
*]Fatih Filled People (Saint’s Feast Days that are comming before the next edition and ways to celebrate or a prayer)
*]Did you know? (Perhaps history, trivia about the Catholic Church, a person, a rite, etc.)
*]Prayer corner (list general intentions and invite readers to include their own, write to you).
*]Questions/Answers (invite readers to ask questions and then research the answers (CCC will probably be the best source).
*]In the news (local, national, world-wide) effecting the Church.
[/LIST]

Just some thoughts.

sounds like an excellent ministry!! God be with you!

Hi, Tiffany,

Here are some thoughts that may be helpful:

1- Have you spoken to your local parish priest about your idea. He may be able to share some practicle tips (the mechanical and financial experiences from the Sunday bulletin may be an eye-opener… ).

2- Are you actually on a college campus? Are yiou a student? Is there already a campus newspaper? If you are on campus, what do other students think of the idea? Magazines represent a lot of work - and as a result it is more then a one person operation. If you school is big enough to have a Law School - look at the Law Review that they publish - and, then, talk to their Editor to find out what is involved with student writers and publishers. If you are still taking classes yourself, you are really looking at taking on a full time job with multiple demands for over-time (of the uncompensated variety!) For most folks this will have a direct impact on their studies and ultimately on their grades.

3- Since you think this has been laid on your heart, would it be helpful to start off small? Here are two ideas: 1- offer to write a Catholic Column in your school’s student newspaper. This will at least let you get some experience while cultivating the readership market you have in mind, and 2- offer to write such a column in your parish’s Sunday bulletin. If both 1 & 2 work out, you will be getting some genuinely valuable experience. Finding out just how a mag is put together is what is necessary - while good writing talent is valuable… some of the greatest literary masterpieces have neve seen the ligth of day because of some problem in gettng the manuscript to print!

4- Unless you have access to an unlimited source of funding - putting out a mag is expensive. What types of ads will you run (for example, are ads from the local liquor store or a bus trip to a gambling casino acceptable? Better to make up your mind before the ad salesmen calls to brag about getting a full page color promotion for St. Patty’s Day from the ABC Discount Gin Mill!)

Good luck - this is a big activity - actually, right up there with launching a business.

God bless

That’s good idea! I have a lot of dislikes during the Mass Can you brought it up to the highest Church? Tell them Emmanuel told you.

The raising of hands of the people together with the Priests must be stop. It looks like the era of Hitler. Only the Priest can do blessings during the entire mass. Blessings can only be done by an ordinary person when there is no presence of the Priests.

The Altar Servers or the Knights of the Altar must only for young boys not for girls.

The Girls should join in the Legion of Mary. They will pray and teach others how to pray especially the Rosary.

Youth can join the choir or Church activities for youth.

The Nuns or Sisters must wear habit and should come back to Church service by helping the Priests in giving communion. The Host should be given by a dedicated person (Priets, Nuns , Sisters) only. It is not just a piece of bread.

The host that fell on the ground (garbage) must not be picked up and give it to the person for communion.

Charitable service by ordinary and true believers can help the Parish Priests in maintaining the security, cleanliness of the Church or the building such as electricals , plumbing, carpentry, etc. so that the Parish Priests will stay independent.

These are all for now!

Salaam/peace;

really a good idea

Believers must invite others to the path of God.

What about including an interfaith dialogue section ? So that students of all faith can know about others faith ; it will help them to respect each other more.

U may ask non- Catholics what they think about Catholics …i guess u know a lot of people ( including me :o think Catholics worship idols . Under misconception title , u may explain ur faith there for all --not only for Catholics .

May God help you , Amen.

To start, I would limit the scope to encouraging Catholics, both active and fallen away, to rediscover or look deeper into the faith, and to seek the truth. Is there a Cardinal Newman Center on or near the campus? That would be a great resource, and has a calendar of masses, devotions and activities.

Stick to Catholicism. Ecumenism certainly has its place, but never at the cost or compromise of the truth. Titles? Hmmmm… let me think a bit.

“You&Christ”
“Home away from home”
“ReTurn”
“Light in darkness”
“Lit candle”
“Faithkeeping”
“Good Faithkeeping”
“Timeless”
“Higher Learning”
“Bread & Wine”
“Saint You”
“CrossRoad”
“the Follower”
“F.S.&HS.”
“Toward Redemption”
“Eternity4U”
“1Church”
“Younity”
“Christ among us”
“The Disciple”
“ReVertical”
“Keeping it” (the faith)
“RePenthouse” (OK, no way…)
"-]This Rock/-]" (sorry, that’s taken.)

Praying for your success.

Christ’s peace.

Wonderful idea! Good ideas for names, too. You might include a regular article that includes kids telling about their own faith journeys and conversions. Nothing convinces a young person like another young person. God bless your work!
