New British PM encouraging growth of Catholic schools

British Prime Minister Theresa May has encouraged the establishment of new Catholic schools, signaling a break in a trend toward secularization, writes Austen Ivereigh for the Crux news site.

In a speech last week, the new prime minister laid our plans for educational reform, including a bid to provide government funding for religious institutions-- including not only Anglican and Catholic but also Jewish, Muslim, and Hindu schools. Such schools now account for about one-third of the primary schools in England.

She is also creating new grammar schools in an apparent bid to increase social mobility and reduce inequality in education, although the advent of selective schooling is controversial over here.
