New US Bishop: Tyler, Texas

This morning the Holy See announced the decision of Pope Benedict XVI to name Bishop-elect Joseph E. Strickland as the new Bishop of Tyler, Texas, USA.

The diocese had been vacant since Bishop Alvaro Corrada del Rio, S.J. was named Bishop of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico in July 2011.

Bishop-elect Strickland is a local boy who has done good. He grew up in Atlanta, Texas, which is about 90 miles from Tyler. As a priest, his first assignment was to a parish in Tyler and when the Diocese of Tyler was erected in 1987, he became its first vocations director.

He had previously been the administrator of the diocese when Bishop Carmody left in 2000 and until Bishop Corrada was installed as bishop in 2001. When Bishop Corrado left in 2011 and was named Apostolic Administrator of the diocese, he tapped Fr. Stickland to serve as his Delegate.

It sounds as if Bishop-elect Strickland not only knows the diocese well, he already has on-the-job experience in overseeing it.
