Newly engaged

I am now engaged to a wonderful woman and was wondering how open we should be about talking about sex especially with our marriage a little over a year away? Should we discuss what is moral and immorral in married life? Should we be open about any fears or questions we have about sex for the other?

Why wouldn’t you?

It seems to me that right now you should be more concerned with what’s morally correct in unmarried life.

Thanks for asking. My answer is this:

You darn well BETTER talk about this topic!

Better now, especially just newly engaged, than on your wedding night when you have just made a sacred, convenant vow for the rest of your life!

You want to be sure that both of you have a very healthy attitude… and expectations! … about the "marital embrace.

But should we talk about specific desires, and things we would be comfortable with right now or wait till we are close to our wedding?

Lay both your cards on the table now, then there will be less what if’s in your life, I’m talking from experience here.

One of the issues I would certainly bring up if you have not already is attitude toward the begetting of children. If one of you is completely on board with the Church teaching against all contraceptive acts and the other is not, you are likely to have problems big enough to make one reconsider the marriage.
