Obama Appeals to Congress for $50 Billion in Emergency Aid

WASHINGTON -- President Obama is pressing Congress to approve emergency aid money to support economic recovery and help avoid widespread layoffs of public workers, the Washington Post reported Saturday.

Congressional leaders received a letter from the president asking for almost $50 billion for distribution to state and local governments, saying that increased spending is “urgent and unavoidable,” the Post reported. The money would protect the jobs of teachers, police and firefighters.

“Because the urgency is high—many school districts, cities and states are already being forced to make these layoffs,” Obama wrote, “these provisions must be passed as quickly as possible.”

Obama’s plea comes despite last year’s $787 billion economic stimulus package, which worked to stabilize the failing economy, but did little to help the country’s high unemployment rate. At 9.7 percent, unemployment is nearly the same as it was a year ago...

I am shocked.

Obama is just having fun, throwing big numbers around.

To him, the actual money is meaningless.

Read the article I just now posted on this forum about how Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana has been handling these actual issues all along.

"Ride Along with Mitch".

The $50 billion is a nice round number; it just rolls off the lips.

But it is just a "baloney" number.

Think about it.

There are 50 states.

So, that's $1 billion per state.

California along is running a deficit operation of around $2-3 billion PER MONTH!

Then there is New York State. Probably a similar number.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie probably can get his state under control with financial and budget reforms.

If New Jersey and Indiana can do it without an infusion of Federal money, then they CAN ALL DO IT!!

If Obama gets the $50 billion to give to the states, then every state will want the money. But they will want that same amount each and every month.

So, it will be $50 billion PER MONTH .... FOREVER.

And it is absolutely unnecessary.

Check with New Jersey and with Indiana.

As with the taekover of GM its another Union Bailout-in the case the NEA and Public service unions that represent Police and Firefighters. Funding of Teachers and local first responders is NOT the responsibility of the Federal Govt. Such funding rewards those loclaities that have given bloated contracts and allowed inefficiencies to continue.

Exactly.

The best thing Obama could do to actually improve employment for the majority of people is to stop the spending and the "mystery regulations" that every employer fears.

If, as I fear, Obama/Pelosi/Reid/Soros are about to sharply increase the price of energy, and it's looking that way, we'll look back on 9.7% unemployment as the "good old days".
