Obama denounces killing of journalist James Foley and pledges ‘justice’

#1

President Obama denounced the killing of American journalist James Foley and pledged that the U.S. will “do what’s necessary to see that justice is done.”

The Obama administration has concluded that a video of an American journalist being executed by Islamist militants is authentic, a senior U.S. official said Wednesday, as White House and counterterrorism officials met to discuss how to respond.

Officials said it was unlikely that the United States would accede to the Islamic State’s demand to end U.S. airstrikes against the group in Iraq, despite its threat to kill another American reporter in its custody. Still, President Obama could face pressure to escalate that campaign after the killing of the American, James Foley.

Asked whether the United States might consider suspending strikes, one U.S. official said the “only question is if we do more.”

"Now, Jim Foley’s life stands in stark contrast to his killers. Let’s be clear about ISIL. They have rampaged across cities and villages, killing innocent, unarmed civilians in cowardly acts of violence. They abduct women and children and subject them to torture and rape and slavery. They have murdered Muslims, both Sunni and Shia, by the thousands. They target Christians and religious minorities, driving them from their homes, murdering them when they can, for no other reason than they practice a different religion. They declare their ambition to commit genocide against an ancient people.

So ISIL speaks for no religion. Their victims are overwhelmingly Muslim, and no faith teaches people to massacre innocents. No just God would stand for what they did yesterday and what they do every single day. ISIL has no ideology of any value to human beings. Their ideology is bankrupt. They may claim, out of expediency, that they are at war with the United States or the West, but the fact is, they terrorize their neighbors and offer them nothing but an endless slavery to their empty vision and the collapse of any definition of civilized behavior.

And people like this ultimately fail. They fail because the future is won by those who build and not destroy, and the world is shaped by people like Jim Foley and the overwhelming majority of humanity who are appalled by those who killed him.

The United States of America will continue to do what we must do to protect our people. We will be vigilant and we will be relentless. When people harm Americans, anywhere, we do what’s necessary to see that justice is done.

And we act against ISIL standing alongside others. The people of Iraq who, with our support, are taking the fight to ISIL, must continue coming together to expel these terrorists from their communities. The people of Syria, whose story Jim Foley told, do not deserve to live under the shadow of a tyrant or terrorists. They have our support in their pursuit of a future rooted in dignity.

From governments and peoples across the Middle East, there has to be a common effort to extract this cancer so that it does not spread. There has to be a clear rejection of these kind of nihilistic ideologies.

“So ISIL speaks for no religion. Their victims are overwhelmingly Muslim, and no faith teaches people to massacre innocents.”

It is interesting to say this.

I think so too, the God part was surprising.

nothing but an endless slavery to their empty vision

Just sharing from Awestruck Catholic Social Network had to say about James Foley

"This man was beheaded yesterday by the ISIS militants in #Iraq but few accounts of his brave life and horrible death have mentioned one significant fact: his faith. James Wright Foley was a Catholic. James Wright Foley, Catholic, writes of praying the rosary in prison -
"I began to pray the rosary. It was what my mother and grandmother would have prayed.
I said 10 Hail Marys between each Our Father. It took a long time, almost an hour to count 100 Hail Marys off on my knuckles. And it helped to keep my mind focused.”

Eternal rest grant unto him Oh Lord and may perpetual light shine upon him, may he rest in peace. Grant Oh Lord, peace and consolation to his family especially his mother. Amen."

Here’s the New York Daily News’ take on it:

Obama returns to golf green after talking to media about journalist’s ISIS execution

President Obama put his own spin on the oft-quoted advice of predecessor Teddy Roosevelt: speak strongly and carry a nine iron.

The vacationing commander-in-chief returned to the golf course Wednesday after calling for justice in the brutal killing of an American journalist by ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) terrorists.

Obama also detailed his conversation with the parents of slain hostage James Foley, 40, whose beheading was videotaped and posted on the Internet by his killers.

The president zipped quickly from a local school to a Martha’s Vineyard golf course after his 12:45 p.m. media session. Obama delivered a short statement and took no questions from the assembled media.

The above from Obama’s speech. Totalitarian extremists do NOT fail “because the future is won by those who build…” They fail, when they do, when strongly opposed by forces stronger than themselves. Obama suggests a “historical determinism” even more flawed than Marxism. But then, maybe Obama really believes in historical determinism.

Remember, the Soviet murder-state lasted for over 72 years. The horrific cabal running North Korea has lasted about 60 years. Whole generations can live and die while totalitarians remain in power doing horrific things.

Scott Johnson @ Power Line blog writes:
In his statement on the beheading of James Foley by devotees of the Islamic State (referred to in his statement as ISIL) yesterday, Obama spoke up on behalf of Islam:
Let’s be clear about ISIL. They have rampaged across cities and villages — killing innocent, unarmed civilians in cowardly acts of violence. They abduct women and children, and subject them to torture and rape and slavery. They have murdered Muslims — both Sunni and Shia — by the thousands. They target Christians and religious minorities, driving them from their homes, murdering them when they can for no other reason than they practice a different religion. They declared their ambition to commit genocide against an ancient people.
So ISIL speaks for no religion.

Obama continued in a theological vein:

Their victims are overwhelmingly Muslim, and no faith teaches people to massacre innocents. No just God would stand for what they did yesterday, and for what they do every single day. ISIL has no ideology of any value to human beings. Their ideology is bankrupt. They may claim out of expediency that they are at war with the United States or the West, but the fact is they terrorize their neighbors and offer them nothing but an endless slavery to their empty vision, and the collapse of any definition of civilized behavior.

ISIL is of course an acronym for the Islamic State in the Levant. It purports to have created or restored an Islamic caliphate in the territory under its control. How do you edit Islam out of the Islamic State?

President Obama may have hit the golf links afterwards, maybe he should be in the situation room but I think the speech itself was good.

That said, I think President Obama would like to be President over social issues and issues of justice more. I don’t believe he likes foreign affairs or understands it well.

There is a very unscientific attitude in academia and popular speech that progress is inevitable and that non-progressive people are going to end up on the wrong side of history.
Historical determinism is a theme of much of Obama’s speeches.

The golfer in chief interrupted his round of golf to speak about this ? Did he let the foursome behind his to play through ? Will a fundraiser with Beyoncé and jay-z be next? How lucky we are to have such a president who takes his job so seriously.

Oh I see what you’re doing here, trying to say Obama does not take his job seriously.

Hmm, kind of like G.W. Bush golfing shortly after 9/11

Iraq is truly a holy land, where the Christians follow the example of Christ, and the Muslims follow the example of Mohammed.

#16

Yes, and Mohammad is not a good example to follow. He was a pedophile and a war monger.

One other thing about our golfer in chief: he said he will work to bring Foley’s killers “to justice” ?? Does he want the terrorist to be brought before a court in the US and face charges, have a lawyer from the ACLU defending him? How about pledging to annihilate ISIS to the best of our abilities?

Even Chris Matthews noticed this on his show earlier this week:

"… no American president can survive if he lets Americans be beheaded on international television with impunity. Impunity! He has to strike back, as an American, it’s in our soul!”

Do we have a president with an American soul ?

I wonder if ISIS is concerned about what our golfer in chief plans to do in response to the killing of Foley.

They’re quaking in their boots—NOT.

New Yorker editor David Remnick pointed out to the president that the Al Qaeda flag is now seen flying in Falluja in Iraq and in certain locations in Syria, and thus the terrorist group has not been “decimated” as Obama had said during his 2012 reelection campaign.
“The analogy we use around here sometimes, and I think is accurate, is if a jayvee team puts on Lakers uniforms that doesn’t make them Kobe Bryant,” Obama told Remnick. “I think there is a distinction between the capacity and reach of a bin Laden and a network that is actively planning major terrorist plots against the homeland versus jihadists who are engaged in various local power struggles and disputes, often sectarian.”
And this is the man who is in charge of US foreign policy.

When a Christian follows their faith seriously you get Mother Teresa.

When a muslim follows their faith seriously you get a suicide bomber.
