Oregon Running Back Blount Suspended for Sucker Punch in Opener

EUGENE, Ore. — Star running back LeGarrette Blount won’t play for Oregon again this year. The school suspended him on Friday for the remainder of season after he slugged Boise State defensive end Byron Hout.

Blount threw the punch Thursday night following the 16th-ranked Ducks’ 19-8 loss to No. 14 Boise State.

As Boise State began celebrating on their famous blue turf, Hout yelled in Blount’s face and tapped him on the shoulder pad. Before Broncos head coach Chris Petersen could pull Hout away, Blount landed a right to Hout’s jaw, knocking him to his knees.

No sympathy for either player here. Blount is obviously wrong for throwing a punch, and deserves his suspension, but the entire situation was provoked by taunting. Boise State’s refusal to suspend their own player is disgraceful. They should also take action against the idiotic scoreboard manager who tried to incite a riot by showing the punch over and over on the video screen.

Sounds like there was more than enough blame to go around.
