Pokemon = Spawn of Satan?

Are you sure the controversy was with Catholics? Wikipedia is notorious for spawning multiple pages on the same topic, but the first link I when googled
Wikipedia Pokemon
was this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokemon

In the controversies section, it says:

Pokémon has been criticized by some Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Christian concerns over Pokémon have primarily addressed perceived occult and violent themes as well as the concept of “Pokémon evolution” (which some relate to the theory of evolution), which is said to go against the Biblical creation account in Genesis,[27] which the majority of Japanese, not adhering to Christianity, do not believe in.[28] [29] The Vatican, however, has countered that the Pokémon trading card game and video games are “full of inventive imagination” and have no “harmful moral side effects”

I wonder if you aren’t confusing Catholics with other Christians?

Odd, i’m so sure it said catholics specifically… And i doubt i’d confuse them, i was baptised as one and went to a catholic school for the most horrific 9 years of my life.

Blorp.

Big Pokemon fan (still looking for Season One in Japanese), but if you look to Wiki for solid information about anything you are duping yourself.

I was going to say, anyone can submit stuff on Wiki, without it ever being reliable or verified as fact. You have to read stuff on Wiki knowing that you might be getting half of the truth.

I recently bought the first 2 DVD boxes of the Diamond and Pearl saga (along with $170 boots… if you saw them, you’d want them too :P) it’s like EPIC with a side serve of AWESOME SAUCE.

If Brock was real, i reckon i’d be more than a bit in love

i thought they’d be mega easy to find in japanese…

The characters used to be cute. But, they aren’t cute anymore. They are ugly, now, and much nastier. That’s how it works. It evolves from innocent and cute, to nasty, nasty, in subtle ways.

It’s all a big racquet, designed to pull you in so you’ll pay big bucks to keep it going.

Suckers! :stuck_out_tongue:

Remember D&D? I think they came across something, psychologically speaking, that draws people in. It’s all a money making scheme.

Resist! Don’t go towards the light. :hypno:

How are they nastier now exactly? Ash is still almost comically dogooder-ish, as are his companions. Pikachu is still heartmeltingly loyal and cute. even team rocket isnt any nastier, just startlingly inept!

I think calling someone that puts money into their hobby or interest a “sucker” is a bit harsh. What about someone that collects baseball cards, or rosaries (like my mom)? Just because you don’t like the interest, doesn’t mean the person that does is a “sucker”.

Not that I’ve noticed. I was lucky enough to buy a couple of videos from a dealer, and I wants MOAR.

But I doesn’t has that much of a moneys. I recently saw there are some affordible editions on B&N, but I really just want the first season.

The American voice cast (at least, the original cast) was covered in awesome, but when they switched casts, ehhh.

I also miss Misty! She was so cute with her Togepi and other water Pokemon.

U duz realize there is another anime thred heers?

C’mon in and play.

Can haz Sailor Kenshin as new CAF best friend?

That’s not quite true. Usually the more popular and well known the topic, the more people have checked it to see if it’s accurate. It’s the less known/obscure topics you need to be more careful of.

Well, when you are sitting in the gaming store looking for new RPG stuff and hear 564,342,011 children screaming about it in the 60 square foot store, it may seem to be the spawn of satan. But it saved gaming stores. Beyond that, it is a form of entertainment. As with many things, parents should keep an eye out but that’s about it.

U can haz!

By the way, ten BIG extra bonus points to anyone who can explain the origins of Pokemon without looking it up.

So, I herd u liek mudkips?

Commukip!!

And Sailor Kenshin, do you mean the origins of pokemon as in the legends surrounding it or the origins like how the AWESOME franchise came to be?

Cuz i’ll give you either

Relax, Patrice, I’m just kidding. Good grief.

Oh, I think they are nastier-looking with each generation. It’s a subjective thing, but, I feel the same way about the Batman movies. Harry Potter, too.

I suppose they change it to keep interest alive.

I’ll take 'em, but I meant how the author of the manga came up with the idea.

Actually, I like how something so cute and small grows to become all mighty, fearsome and powerful!

I think a better analogy/comparison with Pokemon (at least in my case) is how I as a kid was fascinated by the little critters but then my taste “evolved” and now instead of roly-poly buggers who repeat their names and live in metal balls, I play around with monstersreal!

Also, I’m not sure I follow your logic. If something is used to attract people to buy something and make money, it’s… bad?

Now that I think about it… I remember a group of people who believe in the same thing. What were they called… socialists?

Hmm… well I heard the author came up with Pikachu when he tried to do Mickey Mouse.

Iiie!!

‘Poketto Monsutaa:’ The author based his popular franchise on games that rural Japanese kids would play with bugs they carried around. Oh, maybe Bug Races, Bug Battles, Bug Checkers, Bug Chess (or in this case, Shoji and Go?)

Not much Satanic 'bout that.

It depends if one is thinking from a spiritual point of view. From a spiritual point of view it is bad from the standpoint that increasingly large amounts of money are inordinately spent on meaningless entertainment, and that one is being mainipilated in a subtle way. Little and by litte. It is very much like gambling. A little goes a long way.

But, hey, if Pokemon’s your bag, more power to you. ;:whackadoo:
