Polish Leader, 95 Others Dead in Russia Jet Crash

Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife died Saturday along with 130 others when their plane crashed while coming in for a landing in western Russia, officials said.....

Russian plane

This is tragic news. Both for Poland and for the daughter and grandchildren of President and Mrs. Kaczynski.

Lech Kaczynski was reportedly a strong proponent of conservative Catholic values.

I just read about this. How tragic. Not only did Polish President Lech Kaczynski die but so did the Polish Army’s Chief of Staff, General Francsizek Gagor, National Bank President, Slawomir Skrzypek, and Deputy Foreign, Minister Andrzej Kremer, were also on board according to the Polish foreign ministry. But, that is not all of those who died. Russia’s Emergency Ministry said that a total of 96 people died in the crash while a total of 88 of those people were a part of a Polish state delegation. :frowning:

The Presidential plane, the Tu-154, was a plane that was at least 20 years old and had needed and wanted to be replaced but the Polish people were not able to do so because of cost. According to the Aviation Safety Network, there have been 66 crashes of the Tu-154 variety of plane in the last 5 years! Something tells me that this was a huge mistake to let all of these people be passengers aboard such an unsafe plane. May they rest in peace. :signofcross:

He was. He said he would remain Catholic until he died. He did.

Wieczny odpoczynek racz im dać Panie, a światłość wiekuistna niechaj im świeci.

Unfortunately, I highly doubt that he was able to receive the Last Rites before he died unless somehow there was a priest on the plane and they knew they were about to crash. One can only pray that he was indeed in a state of grace when he died.

I hope so. One of the other people on the plane was Ryszard Kaczorowski, the last of the Exiled Presidents, in unbroken fully legal succession under the 1935 constitution, who had passed the office to the first democratically elected president (Wałęsa) in 1990.

There was the Catholic military bishop Gen. Płoski and the Orthodox military archbishop Gen. Chodakowski and possibly some priests on board.

Our priest’s parents live in Poland, as do many of his friends and other family members.

Prayers for Poland, for the souls of those who died, and for their family and friends. Psalm 23 comes to mind.

:signofcross:“Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.” :signofcross:

Bishop Tadeusz Ploski was also aboard the airplane and did not survive. May he and all who perished rest in peace.

So far our greatest national tragedy happened in Katyn during the WWII, now it is connected forever to the death of president Kaczynski and polish politicians who flew there to celebrate the next anniversary.
Last month President Lech Kaczynski has cut short his visit to Vilnius after news that his mother has been taken seriously ill. Now his twin brother of president (former prime minister) is with her in the hospital.
It's also symbolic because polish politicians clashed very often in past years, it was getting even worse in front of the coming presidential election, scheduled on October 3rd. Conservative Kaczynski was many times taunted in press by liberal media. One of his presidential opponents died in the crash with him.

God Bless them all

What a sad, horrible tragedy. An unmitigated disaster. Not only are all the individual families bereft, but now all of Poland has lost many of its greatest modern leaders. :(

Actually, they weren't going there to celebrate anything. They were going there to mourn the anniversary of the death of approximately 20,000 Polish police officers who were killed during World War II in a massacre.

Thank you , I was going to write ‘commemorate’.

That's mere semantics, we knew what irom meant by "celebrate".

In any event, while I cannot say outright where I think the souls of those who died went, let me just say that I have a very deep trust in the mercy of God, and I have a very good feeling about the state of their souls at the moment.

Let this be a reminder to us all that we may be called at any moment, at any time. We must try very hard to live our lives as God would want us to.

I feel sorrow and sympathy for the Polish people. This hurts in another way as well, in that I am of Polish ancestry, so I feel a connection to Poland. They lost so many leaders in this crash. From the sounds of it, their president was a great example of a head of state that knew that God was still his Leader.

May God guide the Polish as they mourn this sad tragedy, and may God guide them as they select new leaders to take up the mantle of their fallen brothers and sisters.

I've lived in US for the last 5 years, before that spent 42 years in Poland..was planning to vote in coming October presidential elections

My condolences to the nation of Poland and the Polish people. A short slide show of those that past away in this tragedy:

Poland remains one of the truly faithful Catholic countries. I am praying for Poland. May the guardian angel of Poland continue to protect and strengthen her.

After the mess. On the way to the Wawel.
