Pope Francis allies accuse Trump White House of 'apocalyptic geopolitics'

**Pope Francis allies accuse Trump White House of ‘apocalyptic geopolitics’ **

Article vetted by the Vatican offers scathing critique of Steve Bannon, who is Catholic, the Trump White House and ‘evangelical fundamentalism’ in the US.

An explosive article written by two close associates of Pope Francis has accused Steve Bannon, the chief White House strategist, of espousing an “apocalyptic geopolitics” whose roots are “not too far apart” from that of Islamist extremism.

The article in La Civiltà Cattolica, which is vetted by the Vatican before publication, lays out a scathing critique of “evangelical fundamentalism” in the US, arguing that, on issues ranging from climate change to “migrants and Muslims”, proponents of the ideology have adopted a twisted reading of scripture and the Old Testament that promotes conflict and war above all else.

The piece was published just days after evangelical leaders met US president Donald Trump in the Oval Office of the White House and “laid hands” on him in prayer following discussions about religious freedom, support for Israel and healthcare reform.

Trump has never convincingly spoken of having religious faith, but won the overwhelming support of white evangelical Christians in the 2016 election.

Vatican experts said the article would have had the explicit backing of the church and Pope Francis. Its authors, Antonio Spadaro, the editor-in-chief of the publication, and Marcelo Figueroa, the editor-in-chief of the Argentinian edition of the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, are known as confidantes of theArgentinian pope.

Bannon, the former editor of the rightwing Breitbart news website, is Catholic, and while he is only briefly mentioned in the article, the piece undoubtedly takes aim at the Trump White House.

It claims that fake religious arguments are being used to demonise segments of the population – particularly when it comes to migrants and Muslims – and to promote the US as a nation that is blessed by God, without ever taking into account the “bond between capital and profits and arms sales”.

I don’t know what to say…

For me this is not much of a surprise. Steve Bannon has promoted the idea that there is a epic, black and white “Judeo-Christian” vs Islam war ramping up. He’s right, this is not a valid interpretation of the Bible. It points out the schizophrenic nature of America in that some believe that we are blessed by God in virtually everything we do and yet we refuse to address some major humanitarian issues, start major wars without much regard to the outcome, and are the main seller of weapons to the war.

He’s also correct about those laying hands on Trump. A decent number of them, including some that gave prayers at his inauguration teach Prosperity Gospel, e.g. God shows you his favor by blessing you with riches. This neatly fits Trump’s view of the world in that there are either winners or losers and he is never a loser, even when he clearly was.

Actually he was the winner. God has blessed him greatly.

Having to declare bankruptcy 4 times is winning? If these were “strategic” like he contends, then he cared little for those who lost money in the process. Also if God allowed him to win, did God support his misogynistic, racist, childish name calling campaign?

This man is all about all holds barred winning, whether it be the financially dubious Atlantic casinos or stepping on everyone and saying anything to get elected. History will not look kindly on him.

Where does this abnormal hatred for Trump come from?

Someone, please tell me.

4 bankruptcies compared to over 500 successful businesses is a very small percentage of failed companies, but okay.

Religion differs with politics. What a SHOCK!!!

ummm. I was fine reading the article until I reached the end. I don’t know how to interpret the last paragraph. Is it a pro-abortion/pro/gay marriage statement? Or is it an anti-abortion/anti-gay marriage? I suspect it is a pro. That made me question the whole validity of the article coming from a Pope Francis ally.

Here is the last paragraph…

"It also criticizes conservative American Catholics who have aligned themselves with fundamentalist Protestants on issues like same-sex marriage and abortion, saying that what really united the groups was a “nostalgic dream of a theocratic type of state”.

Hillary was SUPPOSED to win the election.

The Democrats still cannot get over it.

Hillary was SUPPOSED to run against Jeb! Bush who was supposed to get a real whoopin’.

The posted article says THREE times that Bannon is Catholic. In case you missed it.

Maybe they will post a transcript of his most recent confession.

Exactly! Hello!

I am praying this did not come from a Pope Francis ally.

That is an excellent article who many here probably will not take the time to read.

Read it. Meh. Not really into alt-history fantasies, and no tolerance for fakery.

Of course. Hard to face the facts.

But will they discuss WHY Jeb! lost the primary???

Facts? When someone writes about what would be happening now if Clinton were elected, that is fantasy not fact. I imagine that you can tell the difference.

It’s by Father Antonio Spadaro, SJ who wrote it for “Civilta’ Cattolica”

The information on Father Spadaro is in Italian.

La Civilta Cattolica

La Civiltà Cattolica in English is the fruit of a partnership between its Rome based editors and managers and the Asian Catholic news and feature service, UCA News.
For La Civiltà Cattolica, the English edition is one of four versions of the publication – the other three are in Spanish, French and Korean – launched at the time the 4000th edition in Italian was published (9 February, 2017).
It is in the tradition of Jesuit publications across the world and in many languages that provide a venue for Christian faith and the cultures it is planted in to engage and interact.
La Civiltà Cattolica is a venerable publication of the Italian Jesuits given to them to publish by Pope Pius IX. It is now available in all digital forms and is a presence on social media platforms.
UCA News (UCAN) is a digital multilingual and multimedia news and feature publisher at the service of the Church in Asia. Its reports cover topics of interest and relevance to the Church’s mission in Asia.
UCAN also has the editing and production skills to render in English information created in other languages, most often Asian languages. It also has the marketing capacity to reach the Church worldwide and has readers in 180 countries.
The partnership between La Civiltà Cattolica is founded on both intersecting missions and also capacities that complement each other.

There is no reason to believe that Father Spadaro is not faithful to the Magisterium.

Why would an Italian Jesuit favor Hillary? Criticism of Bannon is not support of Hillary.
