Pope Francis Blesses Open-Air Mass Promoting Law to Prohibit Abortion

MADRID (AP) — Thousands of people have attended a Mass in Madrid to honor family values and support government moves aimed at tightening restrictions on abortion in Spain.

Archbishop Antonio Rouco Varela led Sunday’s outdoor service in Colon square and said “the gift of life” should be considered sacred and not tampered with.

The conservative government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Dec. 20 gave his Cabinet approval for a new abortion law that would allow terminations only in the case of rape or when there is a serious health risk to the mother or fetus. Such a law would need to be approved by Parliament, where the government has a large majority.

Pope Francis gave his blessing for Sunday’s Mass via a video link from the Vatican.

I wish Spain well in their efforts to restrict abortion…

My brother has a Spanish friend and a few years ago he told him that “no one he knew went to mass” and he furthermore, personally, disparaged religious belief and thought it “crazy”.

I’ve heard, nonetheless, that “the Pope Francis effect” has started to reverse this secularizing trend and that mass attendance is spiking.

I thus see this as a most positive development. It would appear that Spanish society is, after a long winter under a Socialist government (understandable given a brutal fascist dictatorship under Franco from 1939 till the 70s) returning to a more faithful spirit.

Franco’s state-imposed variant of Catholicism did much to harm the faith in that country. Now Spain has voted for a conservative government that campaigned explicitly promising to change the liberal abortion law - and the people voted for this in free democratic elections!

You see it cannot be “compelled” like Franco did.

Ha, and liberals said Pope Francis cast aside issues like abortion. :stuck_out_tongue:
Glad to see him doing something about the matter.

Very similar to Ireland then!! Human beings are very rebellious creatures.

I’ve never heard anyone mention Pope Francis would be lenient on abortion…

To be sure…
