Pope, French president discuss controversial laws on family, bioethics

VATICAN CITY (CNS) – When Pope Francis met French President Francois Hollande at the Vatican Jan. 24, their discussions about human dignity touched on several topics of tension between the French church and government, including the family and bioethics, the Vatican said.

A little levity:

President Hollande: Which one of my mistresses should I marry?

Pope Francis: Who am I to judge?

Hollande seemed nervous as he was introduced to the pope and Francis, who does not speak French well, did not appear to give him a particularly warm welcome compared to other heads of state.

Considering the topics of discussion were family and bioethics, I am not surprised that Hollande was nervous and Pope Francis was less warm than usual.
