Pope Saint Paul VI

When can we expect the canonization?

Pius XII first.

Also Pius IX and Leo XIII.

We went centuries without a papal saint. Now it seems that sainthood has become positioned as an almost automatic expectation in some quarters. I wonder why.

Erm…erm…, must be cos we’ve been having saintly popes.

Good point!

How about Pope Liberius? All the Popes before him are Saints and quite a few after too.

He died 1651 years ago.

I just don’t think that it’s appropriate to link the concepts of the Papacy and “expected” sainthood. Seems to verge on “popolatry.” Plus, a great proportion of the canonized popes were martyrs from the early centuries of the Church.
