Professional Hockey

Would attending a hockey game where it is acceptable to throw off your gloves and fistfight be sinful for a Christian disciple?

#2

Only if your conscience tells you it is.

Personally I love hockey. Great game.

It probably isn’t a sin if you regard fistfighting as part of the game of hockey qua hockey. On the other hand, if you consider pugilism as a separate sport sui generis, then of course the usual restrictions apply.

Keep in mind, however, that no matter what your conscience may tell you in any such situation, God always roots for Boston.

what about throwing chickens and octopus on the ice, would this create a moral issue with PETA?

:rotfl: I’ve also never heard of chickens being tossed on the ice.

My son plays hockey…fighting is not supposed to be part of the game, but tempers do flare. Punishment follows. If you check a hot-head hard (legally), you can provoke a fight. Turning the other cheek, will then put him in the box, and not you. Just a little practical biblical advice.

In Pro Hockey, it’s sort of part of the game, but they are also penalized. I think the issue really would be YOUR attitude toward the fighting…do you enjoy it? Are you hoping someone is “taken out”? Now, all out brawls (in all sports) are unfortunate.

God Bless,

Robert.

BTW…Since the rockies are closer to heaven, I’m sure that God and all the choir of angels are Avalanche fans. There is much sadness in heaven this season. :frowning:

I remember these two former IHL heavyweights going at it. The first fighter was Mel Angelstad, a career minor league player playing for the Manitoba Moose. The second fighter was Darcy Hordichuk from the Orlando Solar Bears who was a rookie at the time on the way up to play for the Atlanta Thrashers, and Florida Panthers. These two were going at it atleast two times, and I mean they were throwing punches like there was no tommorow. At the end of the fight, the two shook hands and went to the penalty box. That is what I call sportsmanship in fighting - if there is such a thing.

Fighting in hockey is one of the best parts of the game.

Jacob wrestled an angel, so it can’t be all that bad. Plus in the fights there aren’t that many cheapshots, the players square off and go at it, unlike the Bertuzzi incident.

Man I miss hockey, I’m stuck watching classic games and minor league games.

GO KINGS GO!!

I hate professional hockey because of the fist fighting…its not a random thing like in other sports…its become some warped tradition and that is poor sportsmanship and for the players to engage in it is wrong…if I wanna see pugilism which I dont have a problem with…( heck…I even watch bare knuckle and extreme fighting) I’ll watch a fighting or boxing competition.

No, its not a sin to go and watch a hockey game knowing they will probably fight…but to go and HOPE you see blood shed outside of the game of itself is something that you need to think about if that excites you.

Faithful,
Even though I don’t defend the fighting in hockey I don’t think it’s completely unneccesary. If someone with a hot head wants to retaliate after getting hit it’s better that the fist fight breaks out rather than the guy with the hot head taking his stick and permenately injuring player.

I don’t mind a fight if it’s done in a respectful manner. If you’re going to go after someone, let it be mutual. No need to pull a Bertuzi or McSorely (sp? on both).
