We got us a trilogy! Or really more of a convoy, with director Ridley Scott hinting at connections between “Blade Runner” and his two “Alien” films. But strictly speaking, “Prometheus” is Ridley Scott’s prequel to “Alien” and “Aliens.” The thesis is Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein redux only with corporations, robots and hybrids. Because we can do it, should we do it? As with “Cabin in the Woods,” with its depiction of Abydon, the underworld, opening up, there is a Biblical interface with the “sons of God and the daughters of men” breeding a violent race, one destroyed by God with the Great Deluge. That’s straight up genetics. God flushed His Petri dish. With “Prometheus” we can perhaps better appreciate why.
God reveals lots of DNA issues, fostering an appreciation of the plasticity of early genetics referenced in “Prometheus” with the Sons of God and the Daughters of men knocking boots and making violent giants. Eve was cloned and, as literally translated, “refined” or gene tweaked from Adam’s tissue. Adam & Eve’s children were close-bred, something canonically and secularly illegal today as incest, and with good scientific reason. But it is a process which stabilized the then-pristine gene pool. Sarah & Abraham were line-bred, close-bred, but it was legal in their monotheist culture because of the Woman & Seed formula of Genesis 3:15. Sarah & Abraham were not considered related because, although having the same father, they had different mothers, and lineage was counted by the woman alone, as with modern Jews today.
Scott’s homage to every science fiction film ever made and to his own body of work is deftly done, weaving his themes with Hitchcockian formularity. Charlize Theron as the corporate overseer has one scene where she takes the robot, man’s creation, and angrily clutches his face in her hands with whatever the opposite is of a creative gesture. It is that of an artist threatening to unmold, uncreate, a flawed masterpiece. It is reminiscent of the biblical passages referencing God as the potter controlling the clay. Theron distilled the movie in that one gesture.
SPOILER ALERT: One movie theater attendant was reportedly forewarning would-be viewers that there was a scene with an abortion. It’s really a Ceasarian section as it says in the film. More disturbing is the ovipositor jammed down throats.
The theology in “Prometheus” is tricky with Babylonian-style “evil gods” but it is balanced by our cross-wearing hero who holds out for a Creator of these gods. Prometheus was the light-bearer, cast out of Mt. Olympus by the gods for trying to make man more god-like. This is Lucifer, warned of by Jesus Who said, “Beware of Satan appearing as an angel of light.”
May the Good Shepherd deliver us from the world, the flesh and the devil and guide us safely to Heaven to praise and adore the Holy Trinity for all eternity. And may God have mercy on the soul of Tony Scott, Ridley’s brother and fellow director, who leaped to his death in August 2012. May God have mercy on his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed. AMEN
