Protoevangelium of James

In this it’s said Mary was examined by a midwife to confirm her virginity. Is this a reliable source?
Was she examined to confirm her virginity or is that just legend?

We don’t know. No one can know for sure.

The Protoevangelium of James is non-canonical literature. There may be some additional things supposed by the writer according to the culture of the times

This has good response as well:

It sounds like Fr. Echert is saying Jesus’ " brothers" weren’t stepbrothers but I always assumed they were.

In the Eastern tradition they were traditionally interpreted as stepbrothers, in the Western tradition - as cousins.

Oh, ok.
