Purgatory is a dungeon?

Do you think Purgatory is big dungeon and that our prayers and suffrages are coins that pay off the prisoners’ debt? Because that’s the vibe I get from reading the Church Father.

Well, hopfully said dungeon image will give me more love for my brothers in Purgatory and more incentive to pray for them!

Let’s see:

“Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.” (Matthew 5:25-26 NIV)

“For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built.” (1 Peter 3:18-20)

Well, hopfully said dungeon image will give me more love for my brothers in Purgatory and more incentive to pray for them!

Here’s more incentive:

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’” (Matthew 25:41-43)

that was great!

Glad you guys you liked it! Of course, being able to search the Bible for keywords, like in this case “prison”, makes it a lot easier. Our Fathers and Doctors had it all memorized! :o Plus:

Aside from the theology, my take on purgatory is to imagine your being in purgatory and knowing your next step is into heaven! Do you recall the story “The five people your meet in heaven.” It is really about purgatory in that the character ask when will he see God and his escort says “soon.” He spends his time seeking forgiveness from those he harmed and forgiving those who harmed him and evaluating the value of his earthly life. A sappy and romantice story but well worth considering.

i read somewhere that the souls in Purgatory congregate around the Tabernacle in the Church… I wish i could recall where i heard it but i totally believe it (and i don’t read junk material whether books or whatever… so i feel what i read/heard was reliable).

anyway, if a person wants to know what Purgatory is like, s/he should spend time in the Real Presence…

but they should be doing that anyway…
