Questions about the SDA?

Hello,

I am a Christian, who was christened catholic at a young age and in the past few years I’ve become closer to god. I met a gentleman who is a Seventh Day Adventist. We had a pleasant talk, but he brought up some things I need some clarifications on.

He told me that the Catholic church is in many ways like a cult, with the pope having a mitre saying “Vicarius Fili Dei”, which means Vicar of the son of god. He brought fourth claims that the Catholic church change the worship day to Sunday to convert Pegans to the religion, he claimed that the churches use of these titles is wrong because god says he is the only father. He claimed the use of pictures of mary, christ, and all of the sunday mass events were really paganistic. One thing he mentioned was the bible verse and story in Daniel 2:

"The head of the statue was made of pure gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay. 34 While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands. It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed them. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were all broken to pieces and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. "

This gentleman claimed that this statue represented who would rule Babylon and that it predicted the future of various empires.

He claimed the head of the statue represented Babylon because of its god, he claimed the silver arms and chest was representative of Persia because of its silver; he then claimed the bronze belly and thighs represented Ancient Macedonia under Alexander the Great. He went on to say the legs of Iron were the roman empire, and that the feet of Iron and clay was the Holy Roman Empire and the Catholic rule over the world. He then did some calculations from the bible that he said were the duration of how long the Holy Roman Empire existed.

This gentleman made me believe that the catholic church was controlled by Satan, and that the pope was the anti-christ and that the joining of Catholic and protestant denominations was the end-time prophecy.

I want to know how true is all of this? I have attended the Seventh Day Adventists, and I am skeptical of a lot of what they do and feel as though they are flawed in ways. Especially William Miller’s false prophecy that Christ would rise again made me feel skeptical. I also don’t agree with their beliefs on the idea of being unconscious until christ rises, and I believe we are saved through faith, love, grace, and works.

I am someone who wants to be a theologian and someone who does the right thing. I am looking for historical evidence that can prove this wrong, and that might disprove this idea of the Catholic church being a cult.

Hmmmm. Just Hmmmm.

I was raised in a SDA school. They are good people, despite this beliefs. I guess the best way to evangelize would be to do things the way Jesus did, lead by good example.

Since you ask a question of proof: The Catholic Church is biblical. It is one, Catholic, holy and apostolic. What we believe in is contained in the apostles creed.

Protestants believe in man-made religion. Protestants only have imperfect happiness.

I believe in everything the Catholic Church teaches.

I met a gentleman who told me that every SDA church is built on a pile of cheese. They believe cheese is holy and the only path to salvation. He told me every SDA person is secretly a Mason. He also told me that the SDA church controls the media and global politics, because they are preparing the way for the antichrist.

Refute the above. Of course you can’t and of course it’s rubbish…

…anyone can make absurd outlandish claims. The burden of proof is on the person making those claims. If I approach my neighbour and say “I hear you beat your wife.” Is he required to prove to me that he doesn’t, or am I required to back up my outlandish claim?

OP: attend Mass. Check it out… and see if any of these conspiracy theories resonate as true. I was also raised in an anti-Catholic protestant environment…but eventually learned it was all lies. The Catholic Church was established by Christ and has the fullness of truth. Come and see.

Ask this friend what they think of the fact that their foundress’ name equals 666 in Roman letters.

Run in the opposite direction. The Catholic Church has the fullness of Truth not only bits and pieces. It is the Church established by Jesus. Ask Him who established his Church—it was a man or woman, not the Son of God. We KNOW that for hundreds of years there was no Scripture so oral Sacred Tradition was handed down from the men who live and traveled with Jesus to those afterward. Then Sacred Scripture was written down but everything Jesus said and did wasn’t written down, couldn’t be. And Jesus KNEW we needed an authority for the remainder of time. That is why he chose Peter as the first Pope and set up a direct succession for ever for us to have the Magisterium of the Pope and Bishops in authority. Jesus set up ONE Church not thousands. Stay with the Catholic Church—it is One Holy Catholic Apostolic----not perfect because it is made up of flawed humans but it is the Church Jesus gave the Priesthood to, the Eucharist, The Sacraments, The Mass and like I said Sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture and the Magisterium. All the others may have bits and pieces but they don’t have the fullness of the Truth. Only the Catholic Church.

SDA’s are all about conspiracies against the Catholic Church.
Sounds like you could use some answers!

So? The technical title is actually Vicar of Christ.

The answer to objection #5 may be helpful here.

Sunday is the day of the Resurrection. It’s only logical that as Christians we celebrate the day our Lord rose from the dead.

An age-old objection, yet the Fourth Commandment tells you to honour your father and mother.

That is ridiculous. There is nothing wrong with visual aid.
In defense of the Catholic use of statues and pictures:

As for the events of Sunday Mass, it’s for the most part, divided into two things: Scripture, which cannot be pagan, and the Eucharist, which is received as per Jesus’ command, therefore, not pagan.

According to whose interpretation? Is his interpretation infallible? Private interpretation can lead to some wild conspiracies.

See what I mean? Catholicism has proven time and again that it is not pagan. Peter was the first Pope. We know he wasn’t pagan. Linus was the second Pope. He must have been close with the early Church to succeed Peter. Where does the gentleman think the papacy dropped off from Christianity? Who does he think was the first pope? He probably won’t have answers to that. Also, miscalculations are really common. He probably believes the Pope’s title in roman numerals adds to 666, but so does the name Ellen Gould White, who started the SDAs.

No, he confusing it with Satanism, which last I checked, Satanism targets the Catholic Church out of all denominations to mock it. This doesn’t add up.

In the Bible, the anti-Christ denies that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. No pope has done this, and all popes have affirmed it. You can tell him the idea is anti-biblical (Lol)

Jesus prayed for unity in His Church. The joining of these denominations would be a good thing, not a bad thing.

It’s not.

And you are very right in being so.

Soul sleep has been debunked time and time again.

OP, as a Catholic, why were you attending a SDA church? I cannot understand how you would show any concerns over this man’s claims. They are preposterous.

Please, do some reading, beginning with the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Attend mass if you aren’t already doing so. Make an appointment to speak to a priest if you have questions you need answered. Use the search feature here on CAF.

@cw1940 Welcome to CAF, cw! Use the magnifying glass to hunt for previous threads, and visit catholic.com for explanations galore.

Don’t walk, but RUN from this guy! Please. For your soul’s sake and for the sake of your eternal life in heaven.

You said, “This gentleman made me believe that the Catholic Church is controlled by Satan . . .”
If he could make you believe that in one evening, you have no chance for spiritual survival around this man. In fact, I believe that Satan is using this man.

You DO need to go over what the Church actually teaches regarding these issues, for your own peace of mind, and for personal growth, but, please, don’t even bother to try to correct his thinking. He’ll have another bombardment of equally crazy, off-the-wall ideas that will make you feel so betrayed that you will feel sick at your stomach because he’s so expert at pronouncing all of his “insider information,” as though he’s doing you a tremendous favor.

It’s very rare that anyone can win with these people. There are a bunch of them in my neighborhood and there were several of them in my school when I was growing up, and I worked with one for 26+ years. Generally speaking, in this vicinity, they come equipped with a big ego, a touch of narcissism, and a dramatic way of letting you in on this secret information that they have about that vile Catholic Church. I’ve been wary of them since 2nd grade, so 71 years! and I still don’t understand why they spend so much time and energy vilifying us.

Save yourself a lot of angst and anguish: stay away from this guy! Call a priest and make an appointment. You deserve the truth. :innocent:

The Adventists simply do not understand the Church as Christ founded it. They understand Christ as explained to them by Ellen Gould White - who suffered from organic brain damage and likely mercury poisoning.

Get a copy of The Essential Catholic Survival Guide available from CAF. Very useful book that has chapters on the SDA, JWs, LDS and others. The picture is clarified for you with solid answers.

Hello everyone, I have read all of your comments, and I have put lots of thought into my choice. I am going to go back to my Catholic church on Sunday, go to mass, and talk to my Deacon, Father, and I am going to discuss all of these things.
I have sat and thought about the wrong doings in SDA teaching. Ellen G White did make false predictions, and one of them was that England would intervene in the American Civil War, and that jesus would rise just before the end of the conflict, and me being a history buff, I know this is false. A prophet is not supposed to be false in their teachings, and this I have found.

I find that what this gentleman said was wrong, and he seems to be judgemental and I do not wish to judge people for their life on this earth, that is gods job. I also do not see a problem with the Catholic and Protestant churches joining hands, because I believe we should stop this fighting over religion and we need to see each other as fellow christians, and not enemies.

My best friend died 2 years ago, and he was a catholic, and I miss him everyday, he was 55 years old, and I was 17, but he would take me to his church and I enjoyed it. The times i’ve been to a catholic church, i’ve felt like I was happy, and in the right place, but at the SDA, I feel like I was having to go there out of fear. My biggest thing is I want to be close to god, and I love him in my heart, and I want to understand the Bible, and know the Bible from Gensis to Revelations. It was foolish for me to be convinced by this, but I am going to test the waters always like the Bible says.

Remember the words of Jesus Christ in John 8 that pertains to individuals of any belief or no belief.

34 Jesus answered them: Amen, amen, I say unto you that whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. 35 Now the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the son abideth for ever.

And also that the Holy Spirit will guide the Church and it has teaching authority, Matthew 16:

18 And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.

Matthew 24

35 Heaven and earth shall pass: but my words shall not pass. 36 But of that day and hour no one knoweth: no, not the angels of heaven, but the Father alone.

Deception is a favorite tool of 7th Day Adventists.

Ask them why they don’t celebrate Christmas or Easter…they will say because they’re on the wrong date. . . …

Regarding the pope having Vicar of Christ on his mitre, that’s his title, vicar meaning servant or teacher.

We don’t worship Mary as you know…don’t let anyone turn you away from this one true faith, especially now.

. . . . Stay with the faith, because we have been promised, “The gates of hell shall not prevail against it!”

The Seventh Day Adventists I know celebrate Christmas and Easter. They like others do not necessarily think the dates correspond with actual dates.

They are not Jehovahs Witness.

That’s ironic seeing as most people associate SDA’s as a cult and their false prophetess Ellen G White is a false prophetess. They remind me of Mormons or Jehovah’s Witnesses.

The title is Vicar of Christ. The word Vicar is another way of saying Prime Minister. It is nothing sinister.

I’m glad you are now convinced to remain Catholic.

I do not understand why anyone would go looking for a bologna sandwich when they have an all you can eat buffet with the Catholic faith. I say this because even many protestant Christians consider the SDA to be an apostate cult. It is not mainstream Christianity.

Back in the nineties I dated an SDA woman. They are good people and do many good things. I was Protestant at the time and as I got to know her, I could tell the SDA church is misguided. Others have well explained why the Catholic Church is the true church. Be a witness for your faith in your life. But it might be best to stay away from this person until you are more grounded. God Bless!
