I am a Christian, who was christened catholic at a young age and in the past few years I’ve become closer to god. I met a gentleman who is a Seventh Day Adventist. We had a pleasant talk, but he brought up some things I need some clarifications on.
He told me that the Catholic church is in many ways like a cult, with the pope having a mitre saying “Vicarius Fili Dei”, which means Vicar of the son of god. He brought fourth claims that the Catholic church change the worship day to Sunday to convert Pegans to the religion, he claimed that the churches use of these titles is wrong because god says he is the only father. He claimed the use of pictures of mary, christ, and all of the sunday mass events were really paganistic. One thing he mentioned was the bible verse and story in Daniel 2:
"The head of the statue was made of pure gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay. 34 While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands. It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed them. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were all broken to pieces and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. "
This gentleman claimed that this statue represented who would rule Babylon and that it predicted the future of various empires.
He claimed the head of the statue represented Babylon because of its god, he claimed the silver arms and chest was representative of Persia because of its silver; he then claimed the bronze belly and thighs represented Ancient Macedonia under Alexander the Great. He went on to say the legs of Iron were the roman empire, and that the feet of Iron and clay was the Holy Roman Empire and the Catholic rule over the world. He then did some calculations from the bible that he said were the duration of how long the Holy Roman Empire existed.
This gentleman made me believe that the catholic church was controlled by Satan, and that the pope was the anti-christ and that the joining of Catholic and protestant denominations was the end-time prophecy.
I want to know how true is all of this? I have attended the Seventh Day Adventists, and I am skeptical of a lot of what they do and feel as though they are flawed in ways. Especially William Miller’s false prophecy that Christ would rise again made me feel skeptical. I also don’t agree with their beliefs on the idea of being unconscious until christ rises, and I believe we are saved through faith, love, grace, and works.
I am someone who wants to be a theologian and someone who does the right thing. I am looking for historical evidence that can prove this wrong, and that might disprove this idea of the Catholic church being a cult.
