Hi. I'm a recovering alcoholic and want to know what I can do to keep the communion ritual holy in my life and although I cannot take the wine is there a way in the faith that I can still be a participant in receiving the Eucharist? I personally am plagued by this as I will never again be able to take the wine for the rest of my life.
You're an alcoholic for as long as you want to be an alcoholic. Don't believe that 12 step program that once an alcoholic always an alcoholic. If you have the will to quit for the rest of your life you will. But if you say you're an alcoholic, you are. The key to stop drinking is not wanting to drink anymore--to grow out of your addiction. I used to be an alcoholic/drug addict but I'm not anymore because I grew out of my addiction. I wanted to quit and I quit for the rest of my life. I don't think about it and I don't dream about it. If you're not ready to grow up you won't grow up and see that old habits are childish. When I become a man I have to put away childish habits. Simple as that. There is no secret to quitting drinking, no program, just the will to quit.
