Removing practical doubt

I believed for a long time that more or less the only way to answer a question was to go to a priest. I didn’t understand discernment, because I always feared discernment leads to error. But I’m starting to read more into it, and learn that research, questions, and prayer are all steps that work towards erasing practical doubt about an issue. What are your thoughts? When you’re unsure of something, what steps do you take to educate yourself? at what point do you feel like you have enough information to make a prayerful decision?
