Romney Invested in Medical-Waste Firm That Disposed of Aborted Fetuses, Government Documents Show

Earlier this year, Mitt Romney nearly landed in a politically perilous controversy when the Huffington Post reported that in 1999 the GOP presidential candidate had been part of an investment group that invested $75 million in Stericycle, a medical-waste disposal firm that has been attacked by anti-abortion groups for disposing aborted fetuses collected from family planning clinics. Coming during the heat of the GOP primaries, as Romney tried to sell South Carolina Republicans on his pro-life bona fides, the revelation had the potential to damage the candidate’s reputation among values voters already suspicious of his shifting position on abortion.

But Bain Capital, the private equity firm Romney founded, tamped down the controversy. The company said Romney left the firm in February 1999 to run the troubled 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and likely had nothing to with the deal. The matter never became a campaign issue. But documents filed by Bain and Stericycle with the Securities and Exchange Commission—and obtained by Mother Jones—list Romney as an active participant in the investment. And this deal helped Stericycle, a company with a poor safety record, grow, while yielding tens of millions of dollars in profits for Romney and his partners. The documents—one of which was signed by Romney—also contradict the official account of Romney’s exit from Bain.

The Stericycle deal—the abortion connection aside—is relevant because of questions regarding the timing of Romney’s departure from the private equity firm he founded. Responding to a recent Washington Post story reporting that Bain-acquired companies outsourced jobs, the Romney campaign insisted that Romney exited Bain in February 1999, a month or more before Bain took over two of the companies named in the Post’s article. The SEC documents undercut that defense, indicating that Romney still played a role in Bain investments until at least the end of 1999.

Words fail.

Words from Mother Jones should fail. By November, they’ll have Romney performing abortions himself and participating directly in the killings at Auschwitz.

Romney-bashing. Really.

When the current regime is re-elected, we’ll know who ‘helped.’

I was thinking the same!!!

Which is the lessor of two evils BHO or Mitt?

Mother Jones inspired by the Huffy Post? Remember, this was 1999. Weren’t Romney’s views on abortion different back then? This is a flimsy left-wing attempt at a hatchet job.

So far the Catholic response to the news article seems to be:

(1) Ignore – The story is Romney-bashing.

(2) Ignore – The sources of the story are too liberal.

I also don’t think that this story should disqualify Romney as a presidential candidate, but there seems to be a double standard on CA Forums. I take it that everyone would disqualify a story about Obama that could be characterized as Obama-bashing or came from a conservative news source such as Fox? Doubtful…

You can always vote third party…

So what! Your posting this nonsense as fact not only shows your political bias, but also your ignorance as to how financial investments are made. The main concerns in investing are the financial aspects of an investment opportunity. Very rarely are what services a company performs, or what it manufactures is of concern. Moral judgements have no part in the investment process.
As a matter of fact, on several occasions, anti-Catholic reporters and newspapers have exposed morally questionable investments owned by the Catholic Church.
Lastly, addressing the gist of this thread, anyone who neglects to vote, or votes for a third party candidate in the forthcoming Presidential election is being terribly foolish because in effect they are throwing their vote away and harming our country.
As for Mr. Obama, any individual who tampers with or violates any one of the Five Amendments in our Bill of Rights, should be eliminated from Public Office. Mr Obama, with his Obamacare clearly has violated the Religious Rights section of the First Amendment, and has attempted to violate the Second Amendment with his anti-firearms policies-to wit: the current “Fast and Furious” scandal.
In addition, Mr. Obama has prooven to be the most blatant anti-Catholic President in American History, and any Catholic who votes for him in November will be committing a sin.

Maybe it’s designed to gain some pro-choice voters? I’ll bet Romney would welcome votes from both sides. Some of his Republican opponents were calling him out on this in the primaries.

Is there anything greater than doubtful?

“Commie Jones” rag is ratting out Mitt Romney? So what has “Mother Jones” done for me lately? How about an expose of Mother Teresa’s acceptance of dirty money from Keating, a perp in the savings & loan scandal? What if…? What if nominal Catholics stopped aborting themselves and their children? There’d be a lot less “medical waste.”

Wow, what a dilemma! I guess this separates the real Catholics from the real Republicans. The real are republicans will say give Mitt a pass because beating Obama is more important than the sanctity of human life!

Why wasn’t this principle applied when Mitt was running against Ron Paul and Rick Santorum and Michelle Bachman?

Don’t the primaries count for anything?

Yeah and essentially waste your vote?

  1. Did Mitt know that company disposed of dead children?

  2. Huffington Post. Those two words alone should be enough to have peope raising eyebrows.

I’m not too sure about that. A significant third party vote (like Perot or Wallace) could deprive the eventual winner of 50% of the vote and more importantly, political capital.

That’s possible but it is highly doubtful that a third party candidate is going to win the presidency.

Maybe a better question is did he sell whatever shares he had when he found out about it. According to one source, he was an “active participant.” Just because he might have quit doesn’t take him off the hook.

I’m a liberal Democrat, but “Mother Jones” is the liberal equivalent of “Life Site News.” Both of these news sources should be read with large grains of salt (as should the mainstream news as well).

Did you check on the DPRK’s website, Weekly World News, and Coast to Coast AM for verification of this? You need to properly vet your sources!
