What are the rules for Lent? I know that you cannot eat any meat on Fridays and Ash Wednesday, and that you have to fast (only have one full meal) on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Are there any other rules?
Nope, you’ve got it.
Many people do give something up-- like sweets or soda or tv-- or do extra spiritual reading, prayer, and other works of charity. But these are personal devotions or penances, not required by the Church.
The threefold pillars of Lent (and traditional practices of both Judaism and Christianity) are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving (taken from tonights Gospel reading). Many people try touch on all three of these through the Lenten season.
If you are new to these things, ask your pastor for guidance.
