RUSSIA - VATICAN - Common law relationships, divorce and alcoholism are threats to the family in Russia [AN]

The President of the Commission for the pastoral care of the family of the Archdiocese of the Mother of God in Moscow tells AsiaNews about the mission of the Catholic Church in the country. Despite government policies in favour of traditional values, the divorce rate hovers around 70 per cent. Working with the Orthodox Church is difficult, and ecumenical projects are few.

Much of the article is describing the society that exists in much of Europe an no doubt the US. The particular issues with ecumenical outreach and the Orthodox Church are rooted in centuries of distrust between the two Churches and the Catholic Church is perceived as alien in many places in Russia and not it’s history with relationship to Russia in the past means suspicion persists regarding it.
