Secular song lyrics to praise God

#1

If not for you,
I just wouldn’t have a clue (Bob Dylan)

#2

Maybe I’m amazed at the way you love me all the time(mcartney)

“I got a friend in Jesus”
Norman Greenbaum, Sprit in the Sky

“Jesus, he’s my friend”
The Dooby Brothers, Jesus is Just Alright

“Won’t you look down upon me, Jesus. You gotta help me make a stand. You just got to see me through another day.”
James Taylor, Fire and Rain

I would not look to secular song lyrics to form my theology, but I do enjoy and appreciate some of the secular pop songs that acknowledge God in a positive way.

From what I’ve read, our Bishop Robert Barron is a big fan of Bob Dylan, and he points out the many religious references in his lyrics. Maybe I should listen to more Dylan (if I could just get past his voice :confounded:).

#5

maybe he is too cool to be a Catholic

#6

Maybe he’s like the U2 song. He still hasn’t found what he’s looking for.

Praise You
Fatboy Slim
We’ve come a long long way together
Through the hard times and the good
I have to celebrate you baby
I have to praise you like I should
We’ve come a long long way together
Through the hard times and the good
I have to celebrate you baby
I have to praise you like I should
I have to praise you
I have to praise you
I have to praise you
I have to praise you like I should

Not sure I like this line but the rest is ok

Agree with that but a don’t think ole Norman Cook was thinking one day a thread of this sort might get started on CAF and someone may suggest it haha

I’m always also pleasantly surprised when an overtly religious song, one that actually celebrates religion, does well on the pop charts. It doesn’t happen all that often, but “Oh Happy Day” by the Edwin Hawkins Singers (1969) was one example.

There are some songs by Supertramp which seem religious. Consider Babaji:

All of my life I felt that you were listening
Watching for ways to help me stay in tune
Lord of my dreams, although confusion
Keeps trying to deceive
What is it that makes me believe in you?

Babaji is a Hindu holy man. I am not sure how that relates to the song lyrics.

They have also Lord Is It Mine.

and of course George Harrison’s
“I really want to know you. My sweet Lord.” Though I think he never became Christian.

#14

So much beauty it could make you cry.~ Modest Mouse

#15
