Sexual Impurity and the night

So I’ve been improving by not masturbating. I’ve filled my schedule with tons of stuff and limit my alone time to the bare minimum. That said, I very much struggle in the shower, bathroom, and bedroom, especially since I have insomnia and just stay awake all night with my thoughts. Advice?

This sounds very challenging, and I know how hard it can be. I found in my struggle a lot of strength from a consecration to Our Lady - a rosary everyday and whenever I found myself being tempted I would say a Hail Mary and focus my thoughts to her intercession - don’t underestimate the power of prayer. Regular confession is also really helpful. Of course, praying a Hail Mary once will not fix all your problems, my journey surrounding this issue was a long one with many ups and downs. Don’t lose hope and trust in God’s mercy, He wants you to succeed.

You might also want to use accountability software if you’re struggling with pornography especially, like Covenant Eyes.

Praying for you!

So, I try to not drink anything with caffeine after lunch. However, I sometimes still have insomnia. I find keeping a Bible by the bed, saying a short prayer for help and reading it helps. I read a book I’m interested in - my favorites are the Gospel of St. John and Psalms - until I’m tired enough to fall back to sleep.

Go to the Gym for three hours a day?

Also, keep in mind that the goal is to not be sinless, but to sin less and less! Right? Should you fail, you haven’t really failed if you confess and don’t give up trying. To me, not giving up is a way of repenting.

Pray rosaries at night. If you lower the habit of one thing there the habit will also be lowered elsewhere.

If you absolutely must, try getting an accountability partner to help you (or pray rosaries with you at night too, especially if there’s someone as much of a night owl as you are and they’re willing to video chat).

It won’t be easy but you gotta pray a lot

See a doctor about your insomnia. It is unhealthy and can lead to serious problems.

You can try to form different thoughts about your body, especially when given those circumstances when we are exposed to our privates. Remind yourself your body is a temple, that you can self respect yourself more when you don’t give in to those urges. Our bodies are meant as a gift to be taken care of, not to treat ourselves as however we feel like. I’m trying to give you a different perspective as to what are bodies are and are not, the catechism says it better (the vocation to chastity)

  1. Chastity includes an apprenticeship in self-mastery which is a training in human freedom. The alternative is clear: either man governs his passions and finds peace, or he lets himself be dominated by them and becomes unhappy.126 “Man’s dignity therefore requires him to act out of conscious and free choice, as moved and drawn in a personal way from within, and not by blind impulses in himself or by mere external constraint. Man gains such dignity when, ridding himself of all slavery to the passions, he presses forward to his goal by freely choosing what is good and, by his diligence and skill, effectively secures for himself the means suited to this end.”

Identify the problem here. Boredom and idleness coupled with alone time and access. Now, break up that pattern. a 24 hour gym. A good show on netflix, etc. Confession confession and prayer.

I find Leviticus and Numbers better for helping me get to sleep. After the fifth or sixth “cut it off at the lobe and wave it in the air as an offering” you should be dozing off.

Watch your thoughts always. As soon as an impure thought proposes itself cut it off! Don’t even entertain the idea of an imaginary person. If you cut off the thoughts right from the beginning it will be easier to handle.

Have taken up “Theology of the Body”? It’s definitely an eye opener to help appreciate and respect men and women.

Above all, accept the cross Christ has chosen for you. The reason we fall into sin is because we think we cannot handle or endure the temptation when in fact we can. Christ never chooses a cross we cannot carry. I know it’s not easy but it certainly is possible.

All the best.
