Should I attend a memorial service where they intend to spread the cremains?

A dear relative died recently. He asked his family to spread his cremains in a park. Since this is near to my home, I have been invited. It seems doubtful that I could sway the family from the current plan since I am not close to those who will carry it out. Is it appropriate to attend the memorial for his memory as long as I don’t participate?
