other then prayer, how does one discern?

Which vocation do you desire?

Which one brings you peace when you think of living your life in it?

God puts desire for our vocation within our hearts, and I’ve been told it should bring us peace.

Prayer, giving it time, adoration, being in the state of grace and possibly Spiritual Direction can help us discern.

Blue Rose is absolutely right.

Standing in the right vocation will give you an almost sanctified sense of peace and well-being. Which is not to say that working up to that decision can’t be at times maddening, if not crazy-making…so be patient with yourself while you work this through with the Lord.

And, try to understand, that there are merits, holy saint-making merits to either path. In fact, some would argue that married life is a serious trial, definitely not for the faint of heart.

Also, while you may decide one path, your life could take a different turn later. In other words, you could choose to be married, enjoy and learn from that life, yet, one day, through circumstance, find yourself alone in a contemplative life.

There are many stages in our spiritual growth, only the Lord knows what they will be. Pray that he show you what is best for you NOW.

I know what you mean sometimes the single life vocation feels like a no man’s land. Marriage and the priesthood seem to be the path most taken. In fact when I was in seminary a priest told us we could get married or become a priest he never mentioned staying single.
