I’m not sure how to understand your question. If we’re not damned from birth, why would we need to be relieved of damnation?
Either way, to turn to God means to be reconciled with Him, since Adam turned humanity away from God with his original sin of disobedience. We’re here to learn the whys and hows of obedience, first of all that we don’t even have the power to obey God, without God. So, by gaining the “knowledge of God” through revelation and grace we learn of His existence, of His goodness, and of our need for Him, made evident by the struggles we have with evil here on this relatively God-forsaken earth where man’s will reigns. This reconciliation, as a response of faith which itself is a response to grace, establishes communion with God whereby he indwells and does a work in us, as we cooperate with Him in this endeavor. He becomes our God directly, personally, and proceeds to place His law in our minds and write it on our hearts, fulfilling the New Covenant prophecy of Jer 31:34
