Songs with a Catholic Theme

One of my favorite songs by the late Filipino rapper Francis Magalona is entitled Yo! to Yahweh. To be honest I’m particularly struck by its Catholicity, not just in the lyrics but in the overarching theme. (No OSAS here folks!)

Once upon a time in my life
I had a calling inside my heart
It made me feel so good inside
I wished that God and I would never part

Pure and innocent - I was benevolent
And piously praying for His blessing
I never refused Him, not even for a moment
Oh and all the graces that His love could bring

Jesus is the name of the game
Practice Him and you’ll feel good
Got nothing to lose but more to gain
if you drink of the cup of His blood

As you partake of His body - why you’ll cleanse
your body of sin and disease
Forgive us and we forgive 'em (?)
Let the good insist and let the evil cease

(Chorus) “Yahweh I know you are near
standing always at my side”

There came a point in time in my life
that I felt I was truly wicked
Spiritually dead but physically alive
My environment was the baddest of the bad

I was an altar boy who served on Sundays
Well every week I used to confess
Went to school from Monday to Friday
Receiving communion - what’s the best?

But I discovered it was more easy
to be a sinner than a saint
I used all the pleasures just to please me
I even made Jesus used to pain

I forgot all about Him - even His name
I lived the fast life of lust and greed
in search of fortune, power and fame
Not knowing that it would make His heart bleed (?)

(Repeat chorus)

(Repeat 1st stanza)

Anyone got anything else? (Sorry if there’s already a thread on this)

Yo to Yahweh???

I used to think that God wouldn’t ever smite anybody. Maybe this song title just changed my mind… :stuck_out_tongue:

I wouldn’t go around whistling that in thunderstorms. Just to be on the safe side, ya know?

awesome, beautiful song, a favorite of mine…

Thanks. First time that I’ve heard this. Love it!
Sad that the poor geezer is dead though. R.I.P :frowning:

Here’s a song by Brooke Fraser (her dad was a rugby union player for New Zealand) called Lord Of Lords.
I’ll include the film clip down below.
Fantastic.
Hope you like it.

Beholding Your beauty
Is all that I long for
To worship You Jesus
Is my sole desire
For this very heart
You have shaped for be your pleasure
Purposed to lift Your Name higher

Here in surrender
In pure adoration
I enter Your courts
With an offering of praise
I am Your servant
Come to bring You glory
As is fit for the work of Your hands

[Chorus 1:]
Now unto the Lamb
Who sits on the throne
Be glory and honor and praise
All of creation resounds with the song
Worship and praise Him
The Lord of lords

Spirit now living
And dwelling within me
Keep my eyes fixed
Ever on Jesus’ face
Let not the things of this world
Ever sway me
I’ll run 'til I finish the race

[Chorus 2:]
Now unto the Lamb
Who sits on the throne
Be glory and honor and praise
All of eternity echoes the song
Worship and praise Him
The Lord of lords

Holy Lord
You are holy
Jesus Christ
Is the Lord

[Chorus 3:]
Now unto the Lamb
Who sits on the throne
Be glory and honour and praise
Call all the sinners to join in the song
Worship and praise Him
The Lord of lords

Not exactly ‘Catholic’ per se, but highly interesting: Queen’s Jesus. (The curious thing here is, Freddie Mercury was actually Zoroastrian.)

And then I saw Him in the crowd
A lot of people had gathered round Him
The beggars shouted, the lepers called Him
The old man said nothing
He just stared about him

(Chorus)
All going down to see the Lord Jesus
All going down to see the Lord Jesus
All going down

Then came a man before His feet he fell
“Unclean,” said the leper and rang his bell
Felt the palm of a hand touch his head
“Go now, go now, you’re a new man instead”

(Repeat chorus)

It all began with the three wise men
Followed a star took them to Bethlehem
And made it heard throughout the land
Born was a leader of man

(Repeat chorus)

(Repeat third stanza and chorus)

Just heard this on the local Christian radio.
From Robin Williams.

A Better Man.

Send someone to love me
I need to rest in arms
Keep me safe from harm
In pouring rain

Give me endless summer
Lord I fear the cold
Feel I’m getting old
Before my time

As my soul heals the shame
I will grow through this pain
Lord I’m doing all I can
To be a better man

Go easy on my conscience
'Cause it’s not my fault
I know I’ve been taught
To take the blame

Rest assured my angels
Will catch my tears
Walk me out of here
I’m in pain

As my soul heals the shame
I will grow through this pain
Lord I’m doing all I can
To be a better man

Once you’ve found that lover
You’re homeward bound
Love is all around
Love is all around

I know some have fallen
On stony ground
But Love is all around

Send someone to love me
I need to rest in arms
Keep me safe from harm
In pouring rain

Give me endless summer
Lord I fear the cold
Feel I’m getting old
Before my time

As my soul heals the shame
I will grow through this pain
Lord I’m doin’ all I can
To be a better man

80s Classic: “Kyrie Eleison” by Mister Mister.

I really appreciate these type of threads.

Thanks for all the great music!

Anyone remember this song from the 90’s? Just heard it again the other day and reminded me how peaceful it made me feel. I would say the themes are redemption and salvation. May be a little “Buddhist” in it’s feel but I would say it’s just wonderful!

Martin Page – House of Stone and Light

O Mount Kailas, uncover me;
come my restoration, wash my body clean
I’ve been walking along a crooked path
where the walls have fallen and broken me in half

I’m telling you, I will not rest till I lay down my head
I’m gonna go in the house of stone and light
I shall not cry for the blind man I leave behind
when I go in the house of stone and light,
in the house of stone and light

Holy Lady, show me my soul;
tell me of that place where I must surely go
Old man waiting at the gates for me,
give me the wisdom, give me the key

I’m telling you, I will not rest till I lay down my head
In the house of stone and light
I’ll make my way, O gonna be such a beautiful day
In the house of stone and light
In the house of stone and light

Let me in beneath my skin,
yeah, yeah, oh oh
In the house of stone and light
It’s been to long, my spirit’s been at war
Havasupai Shaman, let me be reborn
And I will embrace the sun upon my face,
come the day I awake the child inside
in the house of stone and light
And when I go I will op op open my eyes
in the house of stone and light
I will see you in the house of stone and light

I’m looking in beneath my skin,
yeah, yeah, oh oh
In the house of stone and light, I’m coming inside
In the house of stone and light, looking for the child
In the house of stone and light, see myself got such a good shelter
In the house of stone and light
In the house of stone and light, I’m gonna let this child come washing of water
In the house of stone and light, He’s speaking softly to me
(I must go there, to find my soul, yeah)
In the house of stone and light, I can see so clearly now
(I will go there to find my soul, yeah)
In the house of stone and light, we’ll keep on knocking on my door
(I must go there, to find my soul, yeah)

In the house of stone and light
(I will go there, to find my soul, yeah)
In the house of stone and light
(I must go there, to find my soul, yeah)

Oooh I love this one too! For the theme of… love and… peace on earth, I guess? It’s a 2 song mash-up.

I know I’ll Be There was originally by someone else… the Jacksons? Not sure about the “Warren’s song” part of it though… might be original.

Israel Kamakawiwo’ole - I’ll Be There/Warren’s Song

You and I must make a pact, we must bring salvation back
And if you need me, oh I’ll be there

When I was a little boy, my grandfather said to me
He said,“help your friends and neighbors to live in harmony”
When a man walks in darkness and he stumbles right from wrong
You should be his brother and help him all along

Take the time to look around, your brother is on the ground
Please don’t look the other way
Listen to what, what I, what I have to say
When I was a little boy, my grandfather said to me
He said,“help your friends and neighbors to live in harmony”

Instrumental

Haina 'ia mai ana kapuana
When I was a keiki, my tutu kane said to me
He said,“help your friends and neighbors to live in harmony”
When a man walks in darkness and he stumbles right from wrong
You should be his brother and help him all along

I’ll be there to help you through
You’ll have faith in all I do
Just call my name and I’ll be there
