Study Finds Marked Rise in Intensely Sexualized Images of Women, not Men

BUFFALO, N.Y. – A study by University at Buffalo sociologists has found that the portrayal of women in the popular media over the last several decades has become increasingly sexualized, even “pornified.” The same is not true of the portrayal of men.
These findings may be cause for concern, the researchers say, because previous research has found sexualized images of women to have far-reaching negative consequences for both men and women.
Erin Hatton, PhD, and Mary Nell Trautner, PhD, assistant professors in the UB Department of Sociology, are the authors of “Equal Opportunity Objectification? The Sexualization of Men and Women on the Cover of Rolling Stone,” which examines the covers of Rolling Stone magazine from 1967 to 2009 to measure changes in the sexualization of men and women in popular media over time.

Yeah its true.
Not news to most people, but it's always good to do studies anyway to get the facts on paper.

The thing is,it is selling and this form of advertising will continue as long as it keeps selling.
I guess if people don't want it to,then men have to stop buying it and publicly say they want advertising with greater family values.

Out of all those Rolling Stones covers to me the most sexualised one is actually one of the ones which people have the most clothes on and thats the one with the two Gossip Girls on the cover because the eating the icecream was done in a sexualised/porn way as opposed to just eating icecream normally/fun.

With men,the advertising isn't so much geared this way except in some cases.Eg:if they are trying to sell a certain product to men they might use a muscly "himbo" type with his shirt off in the hope that the men will be influenced to buy the product in the hope it will make them look like him.
Or they might sometimes have Firemen calenders etc.

Even beauty pageants have become more sexualised.Like years before, they used to walk normal but now they sort of strut fast and "wiggle" like over the top like Victorias Secret type models/walking.

Obviously from the point of view of statistics, it is beautiful to see what even common sense can get out of immoral situations. The pity is there is no moral perspective in the analysis and conclusions. We human beings are not amoral and hence this very very useful research ends up not having the reach it could in trying to bring back the moral conscience of people. Thanks for pointing out this research as it is useful precisely in helping people see how with a little bit of the moral dimension such a research gains a lot. Thanks again.

I'm not surprised. Women have been sexualized for centuries, if not millennia

Study finds noticeable amount of blue pigmentation in atmosphere. :doh2:

Not surprising.
