This is really terrible to see, both as a humanitarian crisis and as a geopolitical catastrophe.

Iran is taking over the Middle East with Russian help. Turkey, a Sunni Islamist state and nominal NATO member, is carving out a buffer between itself and the developing Iranian “empire”. Meanwhile, the U.S. is providing Iran with air support and some ground forces. Local radical and non-radical forces are taking a pounding. Syria and Iraq are outpouring largely Sunni refugees and terrorists into the west.

A more abject failure of American foreign policy could hardly be imagined.
