 I ve never understood why people who have an issue with tattoos (or piercings, or anything similarly 'unnatural') have no issue with women piercing their ears or shaving their legs or armpits. All seems rather arbitrary to me.

Me either... we all alter our bodies in some ways and most are "unnatural", we get piercings, tattoos, dye our hair, cut our hair, get braces (or retainers), wear bras, undies that hold our tummies in, wear make up, ect. some are not as permanent as others, but they are all body modification.
If you get your ears pierced, the hole eventually closes up. Tattoos do not.
When you shave your hair, it grows back. When you tattoo, your skin does not "come back".
Braces are intended to be temporary. Tattoos are not.
Makeup comes off.
Clothing that changes your shape lasts only until you take them off. So.....what does it take to remove your tattoos? And what damage has been done to your skin in the meantime?
Tattoos are indeed body modification.
Body modifications to repair damage done in an accident (as an example) are fine.
What is the purpose of a tattoo? Vanity. And the church does have a stance on that. It's wrong. If you've already done it, well, it's too late. But don't encourage it.
The funny thing is that to most people, tattoos are quite ugly. We see a LOT of tattoos in my area here - it's the main industry along with liquor stores, pawn shops, and bail bond agencies. The first few times I saw what used to be a cute girl covered with tattoos (arms, neck, back, legs) I was tempted to say "Dear God, what happened to your skin? Can it be fixed?" Then I thought, "better not say anything - gang member...."
I had a 14 yr. old boy in a confirmation class I taught. He had the HUGE ear thingamajigs (huge in terms of the hole required in his ear). When he took them out, he had a hole the size of a quarter in each lobe. What a great idea. Good luck finding a job. Good luck trying to talk to somebody and keep their attention - they'll be looking at your ears, not paying attention to anything you say. Ditto with tattoos.
It used to be the only people with tattoos were Marines who got drunk and had a joke played on them by their buddies.
How sad that this has become so mainstream. You don't look cuter. You don't look better. Green skin might have been cool on Star Trek but trust me, it's not an improvement over the original.
So, there we go. IMHO.
