Temptations against chastity

A Blessed Holy Saturday to you all,

It would be super if you could offer me some advice.

In recent months, over a sustained period of time, as a single Catholic, I was burdened with tempations against chastity. Even though I was being faithful to my prayers, attending Mass frequently and receiving our Blessed Lord in the Holy Eucharist I was assailed by these tempatations.

But now all of a sudden, they have vanished in the last few days.

I have no idea why they came upon me in the first place and I have no idea why they have suddenly vanished! I am also scared they will return!

Would anyone have any thoughts about this?

St. Alphonsus advises those who are struggling with temptations against chastity, “In temptations against chastity, the spiritual masters advise us, not so much to contend with the bad thought, as to turn the mind to some spiritual, or, at least, indifferent object. It is useful to combat other bad thoughts face to face, but not thoughts of impurity.”

Have recourse to the Blessed Virgin during times of temptation and distract your attention to some other occupation. The use of sacramentals, such as holy water or blessed medals, can be quite helpful as well. The recitation of the rosary, and a strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin in general, has proven to be quite helpful to those struggling with purity.

prayer, prayer, prayer. I am in the midst of an 8 day litany of St Joseph. The saints are there to help us. Be blessed.

Dear OP,

I know what you mean about fear of temptations returning. It’s all the anxiety that comes with temptations and not being sure if you’ll overcome. I know exactly how this fear feels. God doesn’t want you to be affraid of temptations. I have this prayer that I repeat especially when there are no temptations. “GOD, WHEN TEMPTATIONS APPEAR, COME TO MY AID QUICKLY”. And yes, sooner or later they do appear.

1.The first thing you should do is to ask Jesus to help you and protect you from that.

2.Realize one thing. You don’t have to give in. Ever. You always have a free will.

3.Temptations may want you to start walking on the edge - to go surf web pages that are not really porn, but are not far away from it. Don’t get tricked. Stay far away from the edge.

  1. Sometimes (not rarely) temptations come in waves. And they SEEM overwhelming. When I face those, really bad temptations, I go out for a walk and pray. Try to realise that this too will pass and that you have a free will. Noone has died of not giving in to temptations - eventhough it may feel like it.

  2. If temptations come at night, like if you wake up and are tempted or you are going to bed and temptations arrive. Make a sign of the cross, pickup your rosary, put your hands and the rosary under your pillow and just pray. I normally don’t pray rosary when in this situation. I use my own words and don’t be affraid to talk openly with Jesus with what you are experiencing. God will give you enough peace so that you’ll fall asleep. You’ll see.

  3. When you overcome and temptations go away, be grateful to God, because he gave you the mercy to overcome. Realise though, that with His Grace that was given to you by God, and is always there for you, it was YOU who used that grace and made a choice not to fall. FREE WILL. Know that you’re meriting a lot when in sexual temptations, because that’s one of the primary human instinct and it can truly blind us. Often in these type of temptations, we are very blind, even for our faith.

  4. Don’t talk with temptations. Don’t talk with temptations. Don’t talk with temptations. When you are tempted don’t let temptation guide you. On everything the temptation offers, you reply “I do not want to offend God” and then redirect your mind to something else. It’s better to NOT fight it straight on. Just redirect your mind and do it over and over again.

  5. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO NOT COUNT THE DAYS OF STAYING PURE. Either that will make you proud and will lead to a fall, or you can start tempting yourself by seeing that you are so far already. THE TRUTH IS: If you felt yesterday, and truly make a strong resolution to never do it again and by the grace of God YOU MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION when in temptation, then you can already count all the days of your life as staying pure.

  6. (THIS ONE IS ALL CAPS, IT’S SOOO IMPORTANT) THE FEAR, THAT WE BOTH KNOW, IS A TEMPTATION! IT’S NOT HELPING. SO WHEN IN FEAR IF GOD WILL BE THERE THE NEXT TIME TEMPTATION COMES, FIRST REALISE THAT NO CROSS IS GIVEN THAT COULD NOT BE CARRIED AND THAT YOU HAVE A FREE WILL. GOD’S GRACE WILL SUFFICE. ALWAYS. TURN THIS FEAR INTO YOUR ADVANTAGE. EVERY TIME YOU FEEL THIS FEAR, HAVE IT AS A REMINDER TO ASK GOD “WHEN TEMPTATIONS APPEAR, COME TO MY AID QUICKLY!”

10.(YES ALL CAPS, YET AGAIN  ) PEACE! PEACE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING, DON’T LET ANXIETY TAKE OVER. THIS IS HARD DURING TEMPTATION AND IT PLAYS A HUGE ROLE. STAY AT PEACE. IF YOU CAN’T, PRACTICE! HOW?WHATEVER YOU DO (AT WORK, SCHOOL, AT HOME, LIKE CLEANING, DO EVERYTHING PEACFULLY, NEVER HURRY AND DON’T GET FRUSTRATED).

I hope this helps! I really feel that sometimes even though this is one of the worst type of temptation, it’s overrated. I mean, like some priest during confession told me, that I will fall to this sin again, but that I must go to confession asap. I know what he meant by that. And God bless him, he’s a good priest. But still, we must hear the truth “FREE WILL”.

It’s far better to overcome, eventhough WE WANT TO FALL when temptations come. Yes, WE WANT TO FALL, because we are being deceived by temptations and our nature is fallen ~ without our desire to fall, temptations would have no power at all. I’m sure that every temptation that you overcome gives your crown in heaven an extra pearl.

I hope noone is annoyed by my caps lock typing - otherwise I apologise.

p.s. You did the right thing to pray as usual. Always keep to your prayers. A holy priest (God bless him), once told me. “Maintain order, and the order will maintain you”.
